A bolder education, by design.

About us

At NewComm, we are redefining education and global leadership for students from historically marginalized communities through the power of literature and design. Through our innovative network of "Literary Design Studios," we create spaces where literary study transcends mere reading, discussing, and writing essays into a dynamic tool for research and design, empowering students to build $10,000 projects that benefit their local communities.

In line with this vision, I'm thrilled to share that we are gearing up for our 12th-grade project, which kicks off with a two-week research trip to Rwanda. We call this program "FUTURES," and our goal is to redefine the way students experience Africa. While many student travel programs focus solely on the continent's wildlife, we dare to take a different path. We see ourselves not just as adventurers, but as seekers of knowledge, advocates of change, and believers in the extraordinary power and potential within the stories of African entrepreneurship. Through a deep exploration of African stories and collaboration with African change agents, we aim to provide our learners with a holistic understanding of this diverse and vibrant continent. Our hope is that by doing so, we equip them with the necessary tools to return home and take on the important task of crafting a more promising future for all

NewComm is coming to Brooklyn! We are excited to partner with Pratt Institute’s Center for Art, Design, and Community Engagement, which will host the Design Phase week of our summer program! It will be in one of Pratt’s incredible design studios where our Fellows will rapidly iterate, prototype, and develop the language for their $10,000 social impact venture. Thank you Daniel Bergman for so graciously opening the door for us. We are excited to continue to deepen our relationships and partnerships in Brooklyn!

Hi network, NewComm is planning a one-day summit for our seniors focused on a comprehensive education about the power of money. While we will cover scholarships and financial aid for college, we also want to have a holistic conversation about the purpose and management of money. We are seeking individuals skilled in these areas who are willing to engage with high school seniors, most of whom are first-generation BIPOC college hopefuls. We aim to host this summit in late September in NYC. If you or someone you know fits the bill, please connect with us. This is the #1 concern for our students, and I would love to provide real value to them on this topic. Thank you!

📸 "June Millicent Jordan’s literary works and activism have been influential in the ongoing fight for recognition and justice for marginalized communities. Jordan self-identified as bisexual and her works explored gender, race, immigration, and representation. She professed a profound desire to be her authentic self: “to tell the truth is to become beautiful, to begin to love yourself, value yourself. And that’s political in its most profound way.” [...] A prolific writer, Jordan authored more than 25 major works of poetry, fiction, and essays along with numerous children’s books." #HiddenHerstory #APeoplesJourney #AfricanAmerican #AfricanAmericanArt #AfricanAmericanHistory #BIPOC #Education #TransformativeEducation #Leadership

What is equity in mental health care? One key aspect in effectively addressing mental health is pay equity. Pay equity is mental health care. #equalpayday #blackwomensequalpayday #equality #educationaltransformation #mentalhealth #bipoc #addressinginequalitygaps

THIS is mental health care. Everyone is talking about addressing mental health and only mentioning therapy. Pay equity is mental health care. Fight for the mental health of Black women by strengthening equal pay laws, look into and advocating for passing the Paycheck Fairness Act On the corporate level, you can advocate for pay transparency requiring companies to disclose pay scales and salary ranges for positions, which can help identify and correct wage disparities. On the educational and professional development level find ways to increase access to higher education, professional development courses, and vocational training for Black women through scholarships, grants, and affordable tuition #equalpayday #blackwomensequalpayday #drmartinhere

Wayfarer Foundation's Director of Programs, Celeste Smith, visited with grantee partner, NewComm on June 5, for the organization's Net Gala. The Gala was hosted at Above the Heights (NYC), and the event guest list included a remarkable group of high school students and healthcare professionals from a wide spectrum of practices including general practitioners, anesthesiologists, medical administrators, psychiatrists, and surgeons. The space was lovely and fashionably paid homage to the Met Gala, the annual fundraiser held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Net Gala offered a unique opportunity to showcase available internships and mentorship programs to these exceptional students, providing a platform for fostering future healthcare leaders. #wayfarerfoundation #bahaifaith #bahai #WF #unity #justice #spirituality #philanthropy #community

We must not change ourselves to work in healthcare. We must change healthcare, so we can fully be ourselves. To my fellow Black & brown clinicians - the impact many of us want to make won’t be found in just practicing our profession. The impact is often found when we are courageous enough to practice in our purpose. If you're finding it’s hard to unleash your genius inside of your current healthcare space, don't change your vision. Change your venue. When we don't make the necessary shift, it usually means limiting our impact because it means we have allowed an individual or an institution to decide what our value is and how it must be delivered. Many believe that we should be grateful about the initiatives to "include" us in the healthcare field. Policies to increase our representation in healthcare is not some gift. It is a necessity. It is having clinicians from diverse backgrounds who are able to thrive and safely share their expertise and solutions that will be essential for achieving better health outcomes and equity. Simply put, we are the gift to healthcare. And we must protect it at all costs. #healthcareprofessionals #healthequity #diversityinmedicine #wellness #racisminhealthcare

Only 1.8% of US doctors were Black in 1906 – and the legacy of inequality in medical education has not yet been erased. “Fueled by the Supreme Court’s June 2023 ruling that bans affirmative action in higher education, conservative lawmakers across the country have advanced their own state bans on diversity initiatives, especially those that might make students feel shame or guilt for past harms against people of color. This effort encompasses medical schools. Despite clear and persistent gaps between white and Black doctors – and recent efforts to reckon with racial disparities within the medical profession – lawmakers have tried to advance policies to prohibit diversity initiatives in medicine.” From The Conversation US by Ben Chrisinger. Thank you for the LEGACY shout out!
