Around 7.3 million students with disabilities are enrolled in public K-12 schools in the country. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), students with disabilities are guaranteed the right to free public education with appropriate special education services. However, special education programs are understaffed and underfunded, and students of color with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by the lack of resources. Join The Hunt Institute on 7/25 for a conversation focused on the extra barriers students of color with disabilities face and sustainable solutions to eliminate gaps in services for all students with disabilities. Our CEO, Frances Messano, shares insights from her conversation with Carmita Semaan at #NewSchoolsSummit2024 and The Bridgespan Group's report on the urgent need for sustained support for leaders of color.
Reflecting on my conversation with Carmita Semaan at Summit and a recent report she co-authored with members of The Bridgespan Group (Dorothy Jones, Grace Nguyen, and Nate Wong), I’m struck by how much work still needs to be done to support leaders of color. While more leaders of color are stepping into executive roles, especially in education, we’re also seeing an exodus. Many leaders are fatigued from the lack of support for diversity-focused initiatives, waning philanthropy, and the "glass cliff" phenomenon. All these challenges lead to burnout and turnover as leaders of color are expected to solve systemic problems without support and resources. When I transitioned into the CEO role at NewSchools, I was fortunate to have a critical mentor in Stacey Childress and a supportive board. We spent more than a year preparing for the change, communicating with all stakeholders, strengthening funder relationships, and ensuring I had the support I needed through an executive coach and Chief of Staff. This support was crucial, but this is not the experience of many other leaders of color. We need more than just belief in the potential of leaders of color; we need actionable, sustained investment. This includes providing patient, long-term capital to new CEOs of color, so they have the financial runway they need to hire the right team members, develop a new strategy and oftentimes to fix what’s broken. It also requires board members to have a deep understanding of the unique challenges these leaders face, as well as the current state of the organization The Bridgespan report outlines crucial steps funders can take to ensure leaders of color are not just surviving but thriving in their roles, and driving impactful change in our communities. Quill.org, a member of our Learning Solutions cohort, has been taking the news by storm! They were featured in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's cover story, "The Nonprofits Leading the A.I. Revolution," and spotlighted on NBC News' TODAY Show, where Peter Gault and students from the Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters showcased just how Quill is helping students become strong writers, readers, and critical thinkers through AI. This school year, Quill reached 2.8 million students, keeping their long-term goal of impacting ten million low-income students within grasp. This means Quill is now serving about 5% of all K-12 students in the United States! They’ve also partnered with another Learning Solutions member, aiEDU.org. Together, they’re curating a suite of resources to support teachers in providing quality AI education. Congrats to these two teams for their incredible achievements and dedication to enhancing education. So inspiring! #Education #EdTech #Literacy #Innovation #StudentSuccess
