Shedding light on Long-COVID risk factors has been a personal quest for me. Delighted to share the latest AI study with over 1000 long-COVID patients published in Cell Press iScience with my colleagues from nference, Mayo Clinic, Vir Biotechnology, Inc. and MaineHealth Maine Medical Center. Our study reveals that a perturbed metabolic signature during the acute COVID infection phase (initial few days of SARS-COV-2 infection) including higher triglycerides, low levels of “good cholesterol” (low HDL) and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte NLR ratio (a prognostic marker used in cardiovascular mortality risk stratification) are correlated with increased long-COVID risk. This is further correlated with more severe acute infection phases in patients who go on to receive a formal long COVID diagnosis weeks or even months after the initial COVID-19 index infection. Such a clinical “early marker” for future long COVID onset can be a useful clinical diagnostic tool for prognostic monitoring of patients. Such a clinical decision support system can provide critical insights to improve the Quality of Life for patients battling the debilitating sustained symptoms like brain fog, chronic fatigue syndrome and postural tachycardia. This cluster of life-altering symptoms has had such profound negative impact on tens of thousands of patients in just the USA alone, with the global magnitude of long-COVID anticipated to be far larger than can be measured today. First of many studies to come surely, but has profound implications for how AI can be built from longitudinal patient de-identified data over the powerful Mayo Clinic Platform and more saliently, how the AI diagnostic algorithms developed and validated thus can be deployed to save countless other patient lives globally over the years to come. Congratulations to the terrific team of AI engineers, physicians, scientists, and nurse practitioners who collaborated intensely to make this study possible (Pritha Ghosh Michiel JM Niesen Colin Pawlowski Hari Bandi Unice Yoo Patrick Lenehan Praveen Kumar M Mihika Nadig Sankar Ardhanari John O'Horo AJ Venkatakrishnan Cliff Rosen Amalio Telenti Ryan T.
