The model minority myth paints a picture of Asian Americans as a monolithic group with unparalleled success in academics. A new study by Metro Center affiliate, and NYU Steinhardt Assistant Professor, Mike Hoa Nguyen unpacks this myth, exploring the needs of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students and how higher education institutions support these populations. In 2007, Congress established a federal designation for higher education institutions that enroll at least 10 percent of undergraduate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA&NHPI) students, and who enroll a significant proportion of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This designation as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) was among one of the newest categories of minority-serving institutions that receive federal funding to advance educational equity and support for ethnic and racial minorities. In a two-site case study, assistant professor Mike Hoa Nguyen, collected data from interviews, internal and public university documents, and observations of activities, courses, and meetings to determine the process in which AANAPISI programs expand students’ capacities through culturally relevant course work, mentorship, research, and civic engagement. His findings are published in @The Review of Higher Education. How can we address the disproportionate outcomes of special education placements for students of color? The implementation of culturally responsive and sustaining education resources like, Dismantling Disproportionality In Practice: A Guide to Fostering Culturally Responsive Districts and Schools offers educators a proven solution. Educational institutions can use this new text as an application guide to strengthen and develop educator’s capacities in culturally responsive-sustaining education (CR-SE) so that they respond better to the needs of racially, culturally, and linguistically marginalized students, families, and communities. Dismantling Disproportionality In Practice: A Guide to Fostering Culturally Responsive Districts and Schools includes chapters dedicated to the process of an equity audit to identify and tackle the root causes of disproportionalities and approaches for partnering with young people toward creating an environment every student deserves. Join us in applauding a heartfelt achievement & necessary reminder in the world today, Love is Still Winning /El Amor Siempre Triunfa. A new children's picture book by our own Dr. Fabienne Doucet (@bailabomba), illustrated by J de laVega. Born in Spain, raised in Haiti, and migrating to the U.S. at the age of ten, Fabienne Doucet is the author of the forthcoming bilingual picture book Love is Still Winning/El amor sigue triunfando. An avid reader, writer, karaoke queen, and lifelong dancer, Fabienne writes stories that celebrate the lives and experiences of racially, linguistically, and culturally diverse children and families. She holds a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. When not writing stories for young children or practicing her salsa moves, Fabienne is Executive Director of the NYU Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. She is also an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She lives in New York city with her husband and their two amazing teenagers who are growing up way too fast. J de laVega is an author-illustrator of Puerto Rican descent currently residing in Southern California with her partner, their children, and an ever-growing number of animals. Before becoming an author, J was a chef; she dreams of one day creating an entire line of graphic novel cookbooks. When she’s not drawing or writing, J enjoys planning out the perfect chef’s farm, remodeling dollhouses, and plotting new ways to convince her partner to get a miniature cow. J is the author and illustrator behind Lil’ Libros’ newly released title, Wepa. She hopes to use her platform for social justice and equity. Students, families, educators, and school board members across America are facing unprecedented attacks from far-right extremists who want to dismantle our public schools. But if we show up, speak out, and make our voices heard, we can take back the momentum. The majority of Americans want honest, equitable, and fully funded public schools, just like you. Are you ready to step up in your school district, joining other people from across the country who feel the same as you? Our partners at HEAL Together have kicked off the #PublicSchoolStrong campaign with a monthly training series to give public school parents, family members, educators and supporters from across the country the tools they need to show up and effectively push school districts to promote, protect, and strengthen our public schools. #Education #PublicSchools #PublicSchoolStrong #Educators #Teachers #Students #parents #community #equity #campaign #Fullyfunded #Equitable #Promote #protect #Strengthen #HEALTogether
