Co-Founder, Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer at One Mind | Advancing neuropsychiatric research, driving better care for mental health, leading patient-centered services, & dismantling discrimination through media.

Science creates keys to a better future for people facing mental illness, and scientists deserve gratitude! Yesterday I was delighted to give a talk alongside Carlos Alberto Larrauri, JD, MPA, MSN to inspire 150 scientists at the Accelerating Medicine’s Partnership in Schizophrenia (AMP SCZ) annual investigator meeting. One Mind has been a proud AMP SCZ partner since 2020. My thanks go to AMP scientists for the socially relevant discoveries the program has already made. Key takeaways from the AMP’s early data: Though cannabis use can exacerbate psychosis in clinical high risk people and is not recommended, it can also reduce their negative symptoms. More study is needed to guide policy on the complex issue of legalization. Transgender people at clinical high risk for psychosis experience more severe symptoms than Cisgender people at clinical high risk. This increased severity is fully accounted for by the societal discrimination they also experience. Specific types of childhood trauma correlate with increases in specific symptoms in clinical high risk individuals—for example, a history of abuse associates with worse psychosis, while neglect associates with worse depression. Understanding clients’ histories is essential to providing the best care. Thanks to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health for facilitating the AMP SCZ program, to Scott Woods of Yale University and Martha E. Shenton of Brigham and Women's Hospital for hosting and to Tina Kapur for inviting me to speak.
