Give Sight. Change Lives.

About us

More than 1.22 billion people are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye exam or a pair of glasses. Left untreated, vision impairment can affect a child’s ability to learn, play and grow. Optometry Giving Sight raises vital funds to support projects that train eye care professionals, establish vision centers in developing countries, and deliver eye care services to those in need. So people all over the world can have access to eye care and a brighter future!

Many, many thanks to Eye Recommend and its optometry offices for their very generous support of last year’s OGS World Sight Day Challenge. During the two-month challenge, 66 Eye Recommend practices raised more than $81,800 for OGS! Leading the way was Henderson Vision Centre in Winnipeg MB, whose staff and patients contributed an astounding $11,218 to the annual fundraiser. Next was Rocky Mountain Optometry in Fernie BC. Each practice will receive $300 from Eye Recommend for a congratulatory lunch, as will Barrhaven Optometric Centre (Nepean ON) and Edinburgh Optometry Clinic (Guelph ON). Barrhaven and Edinburgh were randomly selected as lunch winners from the 17 Eye Recommend offices to have raised at least $1,000 for the effort. In addition to Henderson, Rocky Mountain and Barrhaven, rounding out the top 10 contributing Eye Recommend offices were: Valley Vision Optometry, Port Alberni BC; Mountain View Optometry, Cochrane AB; Merivale Vision Care; Ottawa ON; Dolman Eyecare Center, New Hamburg ON; iSmile/Lapienis Optometry, Brampton ON; Spectrum Eyecare & Eyewear, Fredericton NB and; Red Deer Eye Care Centre, Red Deer AB. Thank you all for your very generous support of our efforts to eradicate preventable vision impairment and blindness throughout the world. www.givingsight.org/donate

Before a grant from Optometry Giving Sight was awarded to Vision for the Poor in Guatemala, people of limited means in the country had access to optometrists whose skills were limited to refraction and prescribing eyeglasses and other visual aids. As of today, the grant has enabled 18 of these optometrists to be trained to provide more comprehensive, primary eye care services. That was welcome news to Juan Pablo. Diagnosed with advanced congenital glaucoma, and blind in his right eye, one of the newly trained optometrists was able to prescribe medication and eyeglasses to preserve and improve the vision in his left eye. Expanding optometry education worldwide is just one part of OGS’s strategy to eliminate preventable vision impairment and blindness. Please help us give the gift of sight to everyone, everywhere. givingsight.org/donate
