Yielding is not an option if we want to undo the systemic damage that keeps people from opportunity and abundance. At PEAK, we believe that spurring philanthropy to drive toward racial equity and make transformational shifts to better serve disadvantaged people and communities begins with us. 2023 was a year of organizational growth and evolution. We advanced along our equity journey, leaned into the practice of emergent learning, sharpened our strategy, and deepened our commitment to be a people-centered workplace. With Disability & Philanthropy Forum CEO Emily J. Harris retiring and welcoming new CEO Sandy Ho, PEAK’s Satonya Fair, JD sat down with Harris for a dialogue on career journeys, transitions, and the need for the philanthropic sector at large to better champion disability inclusion. “Philanthropy’s history with disability rights and justice,” Harris says, “is rooted in pity and the idea that people with disabilities need to be moved to the side or fixed rather than embraced as a natural part of the human experience.”

The wait is over! Tune into a special episode of Break Fake Rules featuring leading antiracist scholar and director at the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, and CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), Marcus Walton. Filmed in front of a live audience of rule breakers at #GEO2024, this episode digs into the fake rules that divide us by race and identity. 🎙️Learn from Dr. Kendi about the construct of race and how racist division prevents us from living into our full humanity. ”Racist ideas and bigotry across different areas not only prevents us from recognizing the full humanity of the other, but in being unable to recognize the full humanity of the other, we're actually not able to live in the full humanity of ourselves,” says Dr. Kendi. 💡 Hear Marcus Walton connect what this means for philanthropy, and why we must break the institutional barriers that prevent us from realizing philanthropy’s true purpose. “Institutionalizing a thing, that is philanthropy, that has existed within human relationships since the beginning of humanity dehumanizes it by definition.” 💡 Which fake rules do we need to break to create an #antiracist society? PEAK peer networks are ready to start the summer with insightful learning and sharing opportunities. During PEAK New England’s May hybrid chapter meeting, YW Boston President and CEO Beth Chandler discussed how to move forward in challenging times that threaten diversity, equity, and inclusion. She encouraged attendees to remove stereotypical language from job descriptions and support policies that advance diversity. Technical Product Manager Kyle Renninger presented as well on adopting equity-centered artificial intelligence practices. PEAK Northeast hosted “Building Your Grants Management Handbook,” featuring a presentation the importance of documenting grants management policies and procedures to ensure stability and how knowledge silos pose risks to foundations, copresented by Jewish Foundation for Education of Women (JFEW) Finance and Administration Manager Amanda Lefer, and The Helmsley Charitable Trust Grants Manager Irene Amina Williams. PEAK Delaware Valley organized a successful after-work networking event at the Chancery Market in Wilmington, Delaware, which provided a wonderful opportunity for attendees to deepen their connections and build meaningful relationships within the regional community.
