About us
The Poetry Society of New York (PSNY) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization based in New York City that is dedicated to promoting poetry within our culture. More specifically, the society focuses on finding innovative ways of delivering poetry to the public and on strategic community building within the poetry world. Founded by Stephanie Berger and Nicholas Adamski, PSNY began programing events in late 2007 with the fiscal sponsorship of Fractured Atlas. PSNY’s activities heavily emphasize event production and interactive art installations with additional activities in the fields of publishing and digital media. PSNY’s geographical focus is on New York City and the surrounding areas, but its efforts also ripple nationally and internationally. In the future, PSNY plans to offer grants, residencies, and awards to working poets and other poetry promoters and community organizers. Currently, its primary programs are The Poetry Brothel, The New York City Poetry Festival, and The Typewriter Project.

We're throwing a party! Join us on Friday, April 5th, 2024 at NYC’s historic Players Club for The Poetry Society of New York’s Spring Gala. The goal of our Gala is to raise funds and awareness for the 13th Annual New York City Poetry Festival, the largest free gathering of poets in the country. Our Gala is a love letter to NYC’s rich literary history and groundbreaking literary future; we seek to unite the old world, New York glamor of Gramercy Park and the upstart energy of The Poetry Society of New York. The event will include live music and a cocktail hour from 7-8:30pm, a brief presentation and live auction beginning at 8:30pm, and an open bar and immersive performance elements throughout. PSNY is also honoring the poets, performers, and organizers Mahogany L. Browne and Aja Monet for their epitomization of poetic citizenship, as well as their kindness, wisdom, and commitment to making New York’s poetry community as safe as possible for as many poets as possible. Black tie or festive formal attire is encouraged. Champagne in hand, we will toast to you, our generous patrons, supporters, and lovers of the arts. We cannot wait to convene in supporting this city’s greatest literary gathering.

We're accepting applications for the 2024 Jane Brinkley Fellowship! 💛 Over the span of 10 weeks, an undergraduate college student chosen out of our application field has the chance to work one-on-one with the widely published and highly-regarded poet, CAConrad. This mentorship coincides with our limited-capacity, MFA-grade Virtual Summer Intensive—to which they receive a full scholarship—and culminates in The New York City Poetry Festival, at which they are able to read on the festival’s main stage. With weekly meetings to guide them, PSNY’s fellow finishes their fellowship with a submission-ready chapbook or an equally thrilling, completed interdisciplinary project (which, if they so desire, they can showcase on festival grounds). This fellowship will last from May 27th to September 6th, 2024. The awardee will receive $1,000. In 2022, we at The Poetry Society of New York lost a dynamic, hilarious, and crucial member of our community: Jane Brinkley, PSNY’s former intern with a propensity for typewriters, yellow flowers, and riské art. She was not only a vital component to the 2021 New York City Poetry Festival, without whom it would not have been possible; she was a performer, poet, songbird, and a dear friend. Every year, PSNY offers the Jane Brinkley Fellowship in her memory. Applications are open until April 1st — link in bio to apply.
