About us

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Our mission is more than words. We always aim to prevent and relieve suffering with every action. The Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to people affected by disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is not a government agency. The Red Cross is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission.

  • As you spend time outdoors this summer, we want you to be prepared for an unexpected insect sting. Remember these first aid steps: 📌 Remove the stinger with clean hands or tweezers. 📌 Wash the area with soap and warm water. 📌 Apply antibiotic cream or gel if there are no known allergies. 📌 Use a cold pack to reduce swelling. We encourage everyone to learn first aid. Visit redcross.org to register for a course today.

  • Many don’t realize we have just two minutes to escape a home fire — the most frequent disaster here in Pennsylvania. It's important to prepare now before there's an emergency. 🗒️ Make a home fire escape plan with your family and practice it at least twice a year. 🔥 Make sure you have working smoke alarms on each level of your home and test them once per month. Remember to teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. The Red Cross and community partners are meeting one-on-one with families to share home fire safety information and install free smoke alarms. Visit https://rdcrss.org/3sFBo4I if you need assistance.

  • Sharing some Red Cross history: 📖✍️📜 - The Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881. Barton led the Red Cross for 23 years. - We received our first congressional charter in 1900 and to this day we are tasked by the federal government with providing services to members of the American armed forces and their families as well as providing disaster relief in the United States and around the world. - Prior to the First World War, the Red Cross introduced its first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs. - After World War II, the Red Cross introduced the first nationwide civilian blood program that now supplies more than 40 percent of blood in the U.S.

  • More than two weeks after Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas, the Red Cross is still on the ground helping people work to get back on their feet. On Sunday night, more than 200 people stayed in Red Cross and partner emergency shelters across southeast Texas, seeking relief from the heat and hurricane damage. Cathy, a Red Cross volunteer from Altoona, is providing care and comfort at a shelter in the Houston area. Red Cross disaster workers will help people plan their next steps while continuing to provide shelter and delivering emergency supplies such as food, water and other critical support to people in need. You can help people affected by Hurricane Beryl in the United States. Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or text BERYL to 90999 to donate.
