Attorneys are constantly working against the billable-hour clock, which could make them hesitant to engage in community work. But giving back to local communities is a core principle of many law firms — including Julia Thomas’s firm, Dean Mead. In our new podcast episode, Julia offers insightful advice on how to help busy attorneys engage with their local communities. She and Michelle Calcote King also discuss the importance of building one-on-one connections with legal professionals, the nuances of marketing different types of professional services firms, and why legal marketers should be confident in their own expertise when working with attorneys. Gallup’s recently released 2024 State of the Global Workplace report has some concerning findings. In 2023, low engagement cost the global economy $8.9 trillion, with 62% of participants reporting disengagement at their jobs. Why does this matter? Because there’s a direct link between employee engagement and retention. As it is, AEC firms are struggling to fill openings amid an aging workforce and dwindling skilled labor workforce pool. Retaining employees is more important than ever. Marketing and HR departments can partner up to implement strategies that encourage engagement and retention: 1️⃣ Participate in workplace awards — Working at a firm deemed one of the country’s “Best Places to Work” can fill employees with pride, and it’s a pretty impressive accolade for attracting great talent to your firm. Nominating employees for “Ones to Watch” and “Best of” awards also proves to your workforce that you’re not afraid to recognize their hard work. 2️⃣ Engage with employees on social media — Recognizing employees on social media is an excellent way to boost morale and encourage folks to engage with the firm brand (and each other!) Give a shoutout to that construction worker celebrating 10 years with the business, or share the bylined article your architects published in a trade magazine! 3️⃣ Create an internal newsletter — Employees can’t engage with your firm culture and events if they don’t know what’s happening. Distributing an internal newsletter can help disseminate valuable company information to a team often spread across geographies and job site locations. Use this as a tool to spotlight employees, announce new hires and promotions, share a recent award win, and educate folks on career development opportunities. Credibility heavily influences client selection in the legal industry — and that’s where your earned media strategy comes into play. “Authority is becoming so critical in today’s [legal] marketplace because of how things are changing on the internet. People don’t trust a lot of things. If you’re featured in [credible] media outlets, that then boosts your authority and credibility. Advertising doesn’t convey that credibility.” Doug Brown, J.D. invites Rep Ink’s Michelle Calcote King to talk about legal PR strategies on the “Law Firm Success Strategies” podcast. Michelle answers: 🎯 How is PR different from advertising?  🎯 How does a good PR strategy boost referrals?  🎯 Should law firms use short-form videos in their marketing? 🎯 What can you expect from working with a PR agency?
