    Multiple states have passed legislation around the need for improved classroom management practices and the associated professional development needed for educators. This includes training on topics such as behavioral health, suicide prevention, trauma-informed practices, mental health and classroom management. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?     Educators report increasing classroom behavior challenges, and chronic absenteeism adds to those challenges. Students who missed at least 10% of the school year grew from 15% in 2018 to 28% in 2022, according to the American Enterprise Institute. The problem is more acute in districts with low achievement and higher poverty, where about one-third of students were chronically absent. Given the seriousness of these issues, multiple states across the country have enacted laws designed to: • support students' behavioral health • encourage more teacher training in behavior management • drive use of data-driven multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) for interventions These new requirements pose challenges for many school districts that have limited resources and are contending with teacher shortages resulting from burnout and retirements.     Bullying. Tantrums. Emotional outbursts. Behavioral challenges in the classroom are rising in frequency and severity but only about a third of teachers are effectively trained to manage them. This is partially due to a lack of coursework and training in college programs for teachers. According to the National Council on Teacher Quality, only 15% of teacher special education programs provide sufficient coursework on classroom management and only about 33% of programs require teacher candidates to practice these skills. Increasingly, this is leading to burnout for teachers, and lower outcomes for students. But there’s hope. High quality professional development that builds classroom and behavior management skills alongside tools for emotional wellness and mental health can create a safer, more positive classroom environment – for teachers and students.
