Today, we welcomed riders, community partners, and UTA employees to celebrate 34 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our Committee on Accessible Transit (CAT) proudly recognized the collective efforts of riders and employees who have significantly contributed to making UTA a more accessible and inclusive space for all. Congratulations to the I Am UTA award winners: - Christy Allen, UTA Coordinated Mobility Manager, is a visionary leader who inspires her team to go above and beyond in meeting the needs of seniors and people with disabilities. - Jessica Stocks, UTA Timpanogos Bus Operator, is so loved by her riders with disabilities they asked her to attend their school graduation. - Cherryl Beveridge, former UTA Chief Operations Officer, dedicated 45 years to UTA. She implemented pioneering practices and procedures to serve riders with disabilities, demonstrating her unwavering commitment and selfless service. Congratulations to I Ride UTA award winners: - Lenny Jones, a UTA rider in Utah County, has gained independence by teaching himself and others how to ride the UTA bus. He regularly rides to work, the grocery store, and the mall via UTA services. He has been riding for 15+ years. - Sarah Jones, a UTA FrontRunner rider, began riding to school with her parents' encouragement. Years later, she rides regularly on the bus and TRAX to doctors' appointments and events and to see family. She has been riding for 10+ years. The 2002 Winter Games showcased UTA's expertise as the primary transit partner, delivering a smooth experience for spectators. Now, we're excited and ready to return to the Olympic and world stage in 2034. Since then, UTA has transformed. We've expanded the TRAX network, connected the Wasatch Front with FrontRunner commuter rail, and implemented clean-air electric buses. And we’re not stopping there. New projects are on the horizon, featuring innovative solutions and regional connectivity with more frequency and expanded service on all our modes. Our long-range transit plan for Utah already includes projects that will support the Games like: - FrontRunner improvements to open up 15-minute and Sunday service - A new TRAX Orange Line from Salt Lake City International Airport to University of Utah Research Park - Mid-Valley Express (MVX) bus rapid transit line connecting Murray to West Valley - Davis-to-SLC Connector - 5600 West Enhanced Bus from Old Bingham Highway Station to the Salt Lake City International Airport The real winners of the 2034 Winter Games are Utahns. These UTA advancements will add to our world-class transit system and benefit residents and future visitors for decades to come. UDOT and UTA, as key partners, are introducing an exciting new technology called vehicle-to-everything (V2X), underscoring our shared commitment to innovation and progress. To put it simply, V2X enables vehicles to communicate with drivers and their surroundings through sensors and wireless connectivity. This means that vehicles can "talk" to each other and to the road infrastructure. The technology is already in use on several UTA buses, where it helps improve on-time arrival through traffic signal prioritization. In the future, V2X will be able to alert drivers in real time about potential hazards and road closures ahead. By connecting vehicles and infrastructure, V2X has the potential to save lives and create a safer transportation system for all of Utah, ushering in a new era of efficient and secure travel. Good news! UTA was just awarded $18 million from the Federal Transit Administration to purchase more electric buses for our fleet. These new electric buses and our expanding electric bus charging infrastructure provide more zero-emission travel options and take cars off the road, leading to cleaner air and a better quality of life for Utahns. Thank you to Rep. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Rep. Moore, Rep. Burgess, Senator Romney, and to the Federal Transit Administration for your support in securing this funding for Utah. It’s Electric! On June 20, UTA joined Rocky Mountain Power, City of Millcreek, and public charging network Electrify America to mark the completion of new charging stations at the Olympus Cove Park and Ride lot. The location provides high-powered charging stations for electric passenger vehicles (EVs) as well as a fast charger for UTA electric buses. This dual-use infrastructure extends the range of UTA’s electric buses, taking more cars off the road and contributing to cleaner air across the Wasatch Front. #Sustainability
