We were thrilled to recently meet with and gain valuable input from the community surrounding the Granby Street Fishing Pier project site in Norfolk, Virginia. Thanks to the full design team behind this endeavor. We hope to incorporate some of the things we heard at the meeting as we seek to provide a safer, more aesthetically pleasing, and better functioning public access to the water. https://lnkd.in/eV8BR_Qm Credit: City of Norfolk, VA Public Works Speight • Marshall • Francis Bamforth Engineers + Surveyors Bay Environmental

Creating meaningful places in the spaces that people often look over as opportunities is one the key tenets of SGA’s approach to downtown revitalization. We were honored to join representatives of the City of Shamokin and SEDA-COG at the Pennsylvania Downtown Center’s Townie Award Ceremony. Illumination Station, the downtown pocket park we designed as a part of a blight mitigation project received an award in the Public Space/Physical Improvement & Design category. More importantly the community is actively using the space and it is becoming another key asset in downtown. GOShamokin!
Shamokin has won a Townie Award! Congratulations to the Shamokin Partnership of Revitalization and our own Betsy Kramer, CEcD, EDP for the work being done in Shamokin! Thank you to Pennsylvania Downtown Center for recognizing and celebrating the amazing transformations being made. Congratulations and thank you to Shamokin Area Businesses for Economic Revitalization (SABER), Stromberg/Garrigan & Associates, Inc., justin bainbridge, and the City of Shamokin‒Go Shamokin! PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: The Ryan Resilience Lab had its official Grand Opening on June 1st and it was a great day to be outside and enjoying the restored natural landscape of Knitting Mill Creek in Norfolk. SGA led the design of all of the ecosystem and site resilience elements on a former brownfield and marina site. The project included the removal of the hard engineered sheet piling and the restoration of the natural habitat with a living shoreline designed to promote oyster populations and to respond to sea level rise. A wide variety of other green infrastructure was integrated into the design including bio-retention and permeable paving. The last piece of the project is currently under construction, which is an elevated circular boardwalk that will serve as an important element for environmental education for visitors and school groups.

SGA Principal, Sean Garrigan was pleased to be one of the representatives of the Pennsylvania/Delaware Chapter of the ASLA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design Department of Landscape Architecture annual awards jury program. The nominated group of graduate students illustrated the highest caliber of academic work in the field and represented a real challenge for the jury to determine Honor and Merit awardees. Sean, a Class of 1995 UPENN MLA alumnus, had the honor of presenting the awards to the students with the Department Chair, Catherine Seavitt.

At the Kick-Off event for the 9th Annual Montgomery County Trail Challenge, staff from SGA and Toole Recreation Planning were interviewing participants about how they use Lorimer Park to inform the master planning for the 230 acre park at the edge of Philadelphia. SGA and Toole Recreation Planning hit the pavement, chatting with park users and families from all over the Philadelphia Region. The Kick-Off event drew a crowd, thanks to a PennDOT grant awarded to Montgomery County that made it possible to give away bike helmets to kids. This year's Trail Challenge will last through the year, ending on December 2. Last year, over 1300 folks joined in, and already this year, over 300 have registered. Looks like the Trail Challenge is becoming the place to be for outdoor fun in the Delaware Valley Region! Happy Birthday to Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture. Olmsted had a massive influence in America and worldwide given his incredible life journey and the context of the time in which he lived. After a long series of character- and skill-building occupations, at the age of 45, Olmsted officially pioneered the profession of landscape architecture and forever positively impacted our world. He still inspires us today! #FrederickLawOlmsted #LandscapeLegacy #WLAM2024

At SGA we believe that every day is Earth Day. Our commitment to sustainable practices is woven into the fabric of our work. It’s no coincidence that Earth Day falls within World Landscape Architecture Month, and as stewards of the environment, we strive to create outdoor spaces that harmonize with nature, enhance well-being, and promote ecological balance. Our work isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating lasting connections between people and their environment. Let’s celebrate Earth Day by renewing our commitment to a greener, healthier planet. Thank you for being part of our journey. Together, we can make a difference—one project at a time. -- Animation credit goes to our recent intern Anna Fox. #EarthDay #sustainablelandscapes #landscapearchitecture #WLAM2024
