The Supreme Court recently upheld the law prohibiting domestic abusers from having guns. Domestic Violence Protective Orders, or DVPOs, are at the center of the ruling. Also known as a restraining order or 50B order, a Domestic Violence Protective Order is a court order that protects victims of domestic violence from their abusers. In a recent blog post, Suzi Canali, Safe Alliance's Chief Legal Officer, breaks down why DVPOs are so powerful and how someone can obtain one. Check out the post to learn about how a DVPO can provide economic mobility, temporary custody arrangements, safety, and empowerment for survivors in our recent blog post. Safe Alliance is client-centered and trauma-informed when supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. These issues impact entire families so Safe Alliance works to strengthen family bonds by increasing protective factors. Protective factors are characteristics or conditions that can reduce the effects of stress, trauma, or risk. Protective factors allow whole families to find hope and healing from domestic violence and sexual assault. Stay tuned as we'll be sharing more about each factor in the coming weeks. Safe Alliance is pleased that the Supreme Court upheld the law prohibiting domestic abusers from having guns. This ruling helps protect victims and their families as they leave violent situations because research shows a woman is five times more likely to be murdered if her abuser has access to a gun (National Library of Medicine). It also affirms the critical work our Victim Assistance Court Program does to help survivors navigate the legal system to secure Domestic Violence Protective Orders, which is required before an abuser loses access to their firearms. We hope that anyone experiencing domestic violence feels encouraged to reach out for support knowing this ruling stands and Safe Alliance is here for you. Our 24/7 Greater Charlotte Hope Line is always available at 980.771.4673 and our Victim Assistance Court Program is open for walk-ins on Mondays-Fridays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
