Since its founding by the Virginia General Assembly in 1970, the Science Museum of Virginia has brought learning to life with hundreds of experiential exhibits, awe-inspiring artifacts, and interactive technologies. The Science Museum of Virginia is a place that incites inquiry and cultivates curiosity. We feature permanent exhibitions on space, health, electricity, and the earth—to name a few—and we host visiting exhibitions from around the world.

Today I attended the Sunrise Science and Up & Atom Women's Leadership Initiative event at the Science Museum of Virginia for STEM leaders and educators. It was a motivational experience, especially with Mariana Fonseca Medina sharing her inspiring journey from a career in engineering to finance and her role as a Senior Executive Vice President at Mastercard. I related to Mariana's career transition and challenges, reflecting on my own journey from health sciences and STEM to financial education. The event not only bridged diverse aspects of my professional background but also emphasized the pivotal role of women in STEM and leadership, making it a significant and enriching start to Women's History Month. Meeting numerous women in leadership and STEM careers was equally remarkable, providing a powerful network of role models. I decided to bring my daughter along, seizing the opportunity for her to learn from these accomplished women. Navigating the event with my daughter during Women's History Month felt like a meaningful way to honor the occasion. Witnessing her enthusiasm for science left me with a sense of pride and excitement for her future in a STEM field.

The Science Museum of Virginia Foundation is one of 14 organizations receiving a Commonwealth History Fund grant. The Science Museum will use the $20,000 award managed by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture and supported by Dominion Energy to develop a comprehensive architectural, social and cultural history document of Broad Street Station--the passenger train depot which operated from 1919 until the Science Museum's opening in 1975. Broad Street Station saw tens of thousands of visitors each week! We are excited to explore this robust history by engaging with historians, preservationists, scientists and community outreach specialists, and connect our past to the 21st century STEM topics revealed in our programming.

This Up & Atom Women’s Leadership Initiative edition features an enhanced networking session following the speaker series. After the talk ends, from 9 a.m.- 10 a.m., 75 pre-registered guests wanting to deepen their engagement with the speaker and each other are invited to stay for a special event.
