About us
Sequoia helps daring founders build legendary companies from idea to IPO and beyond. We aim to be the first true believers in tomorrow’s most valuable and enduring businesses. We partner with a few outliers each year and go all-in, providing them with the hands-on help required at every stage of the company building journey. Our expertise comes from 50 years of working with legendary founders like Steve Jobs, Larry Page, Jan Koum, Adi Tatarko, Brian Chesky, Jensen Huang, Anne Wojcicki, Eric Yuan, Patrick Collison, Julia Hartz, and Sebastian Siemiatkowski. In aggregate, Sequoia-backed companies account for more than 25% of NASDAQ's total value. Since our inception, the vast majority of the money we invest has been on behalf of nonprofits and schools like the Ford Foundation, Mayo Clinic and MIT, which means most of the returns we generate benefit these great causes.

A quick plug for my just-published Fortune cover story on Sequoia Capital's leader, Roelof Botha, but also for long form journalism: There are many reasons why I love long form journalism, much as I appreciate brevity. One of them is that you can't really get to know someone without interviewing them multiple times, without seeing them in different scenarios, and without getting at least a few thousand words in which to portray them... warts and all. Feeling incredibly fortunate to get to do the work I love doing, profiling fascinating people doing hard things. (And to do it for the uber talented Matthew Heimer.) https://lnkd.in/gPAk_hCT

Sundar Pichai and Mark Zuckerberg both out in the last 24 hours now explicitly agreeing with my AI Arms Race narrative: That AI CapEx is driven by game theory and FOMO vs. actual revenue / usage. There are 4 major players in this game theory problem, and two are now on-the-record about their strategies. (Summary below from Thomas Wigg newsletter).

It was summer of 2022. Chkk had just raised a seed round from Sequoia Capital and I was pumped to start building–working with our design partners, growing the team, meeting with new customers, delivering for them. Then Bogomil Balkansky recommended we join a new Sequoia company-building immersion they were launching, Arc. It seemed interesting, until I learned it was a heavy 7-week long commitment (they've since trimmed it down to 5)… I’ve attended big tech leadership retreats in the past and had found them, without fail, a complete waste of time–run by people who have never built or operated anything of consequence, and too generalized to have real impact. So naturally I was skeptical of Arc, especially at such an exciting time for Chkk when I really wanted to be heads down and building. But I agreed to try it. And I'm glad I did. Arc was different. - Arc is run by operators for operators. You’ll work with experts who have been there and done it at the highest levels. - The curriculum is full of actionable knowledge and insights critical for this stage of your company building journey, and it’s a deeply personalized experience. - The community is outstanding. From the guest speakers, to the network of operators, to the other entrepreneurs participating in the program–the relationships you’ll build at Arc will have a huge impact on your future. Congratulations to the entire Chainguard team on their $140M Series C round. Sequoia Capital is proud to be on this journey with you. While every other #cybesecurity tool points to problems that other teams (developers, SREs) need to fix, Chainguard actually does the hard, toilsome work of fixing vulnerabilities in open source. #opensource
I know it's a bit of a slow news week, but I wanted to share some thoughts on where I see the software supply chain security space going. Also, I wanted to announce that Chainguard has just raised a $140M Series C from Redpoint, IVP, and Lightspeed to grow and scale our vision of a secure open source supply chain. I’m excited to partner with Tom Loverro, Arsham Memarzadeh, Guru Chahal, Sai Senthilkumar, and Scott Raney, as well as for all of our existing investors (Lenny Pruss, Bogomil Balkansky, Alex Pall, Clay Fisher) to participate again in this next chapter. We’ve come a long way, and I’m incredibly proud of our team and everything we’ve done. But we still have a long way to go, and these supply chains aren’t going to secure themselves! #chainguard #opensource #softwaresupplychainsecurity

Excited to share our partnership at Sequoia Capital with Fil Twarowski and Edvard Eriksson, building rift: an all-in-one tool for salespeople to simplify the entire process of running sequences, sending emails, making calls, and booking meetings (rift.com). Fil & Eddie are some of the most talented GTM folks we know who exude domain expertise, hustle, a grounded perspective to see reality clearly, and pure focus on execution. We're so excited to be in business together!
Hey everyone - big news for team rift! We raised a $5m seed led by Stephanie Zhan from Sequoia Capital with participation from Y Combinator, Soma Capital and incredible angels. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/dR6ZhrJN. At rift, we focus on automating the repetitive and tedious sales work so that sales teams can spend more time doing what they do best – selling. If you find that your sales team is spending too much time on admin, repetitive tasks, and not enough on actually selling - get in touch with us!

“Participating in Arc was a transformative experience that perfectly aligned with our process of exploring what to build. We discovered how to be practical about finding product-market fit—removing the emotion and celebrating learning from failures to quickly move on.” Apply to Arc and join Sequoia’s community to learn from, lean on, and connect with founders like Pydantic’s Samuel Colvin.
