Here’s to another summer of our integrated internship program! ☀ Last month, we welcomed 11 interns from colleges and universities across the country, from Wentworth, UMass Amherst, and Simmons right here in Massachusetts, to Purdue, Syracuse, and UT Knoxville. The program brings together numerous disciplines, exposing each intern to SMMA’s integrated design model. Throughout the summer they are given the opportunity to collaborate, address project challenges, and give back to the community by developing design solutions for a pro-bono project right in our backyard in Cambridge, MA. So far, the group has had the opportunity to attend site visits and participate in social, technical, and professional development activities, gaining leadership, public speaking, and communication skills. And of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Boston summer without seeing a game at Fenway! ⚾ As the summer wraps up, the interns will be given the opportunity to present their project design to SMMA and the client. #NationalInternDay #SMMAIntegratedInternship #Internship

A round of applause for two SMMA Interior Designers, Sarah Long, NCIDQ and Alyssa Tompkins, MFA, NCIDQ on earning their NCIDQ certification! 🎉 A significant milestone in many interior designer’s professional careers, the NCIDQ certification signifies expertise in building systems, codes, design application, and project coordination, to name a few. It also demonstrates the ability to design for public health, safety, and welfare. Sarah has been with SMMA for 8 years and primarily works on our K-12 projects, most recently Andover West Elementary & Shawsheen Preschool, Concord Middle School, and Waltham High School. Looking ahead, Sarah is excited to focus her energy on training and mentoring her colleagues at SMMA. “I find one of the best ways to improve oneself is to help better those around you,” said Long. “I'm a steadfast believer that we never stop learning!” Alyssa has been with SMMA for 9 years. She mostly focuses on our Government practice including projects for Hanscom Air Force Base and the Newport Naval Station. “Being a designer fits all parts of my personality,” said Alyssa. “I have a rigid side that likes to be organized and plan ahead and a creative side that loves to express myself.” "I am incredibly proud of Sarah and Alyssa,” said Marie Fitzgerald, Director of Interior Design at SMMA. “Their talent and dedication have truly shined through, proving their exceptional skills and qualifications as interior designers. As we look forward to the passage of professional licensure in Massachusetts, this achievement comes at the perfect time, underscoring the importance of qualified professionals in our industry.” #SMMAPeople #NCIDQ #InteriorDesign

Situated in Boston’s South End, 321 Harrison Avenue is home to numerous leading-edge life science and biotech companies. The striking and symbolic building includes eight stories of lab, office, and retail space, with a vibrant lobby space connecting Harrison Ave and Washington St. If you look closely at the facade, you might notice a nod to the building’s address; light reflecting off the pleated curtainwall reveals the Roman numerals III, II, I.   Inside, lab and office workers enjoy dramatic views of Boston’s skyline and connected workplaces, achieved by utilizing an offset core that allows for uninterrupted floorplates throughout the building. 🔗 Click below to learn more:  https://lnkd.in/gkVDqHTU 🏗 GC: The Richmond Group #BostonArchitecture #BioTech #LifeScience

How can we use architecture to step beyond sustainable solutions into regenerative ones – analyzing our ever-evolving ecosystems to craft spaces that teach, encourage, and drive regenerative efforts in the built environment? 🌲 This was the challenge students considered in the 2024 Lyceum Fellowship competition; a traveling architectural fellowship that grants funds to students. Created in 1985 by SMMA founding partner, Jon McKee, the impact of this program carries on, with over $650,000 awarded to students since the fellowship began. In June, SMMA’s Director of Design and Lyceum Board member, Michael Pardek, AIA, joined other jury members at GOA Architecture's headquarters for deliberations. We are pleased to congratulate Lance Keoki Kubiak and Zack Blais on being selected as part of Metropolis Magazine’s Boston Arch30 program, which celebrates rising leaders in architecture ✨ Originally from California, Lance has been a passionate member of SMMA for four years, primarily contributing to our Life Science market. His technical and design expertise, decisiveness, and enthusiasm makes him a respected mentor and teammate during all phases of a project. “Lance has been an incredible addition to our architectural team,” says Nick Koulbanis, Director of Architecture. “His ability to bring enthusiasm to whatever task he tackles is contagious. His good humor and his deep knowledge in the Life Science market have greatly benefited our projects. This recognition is well-deserved.” Zack’s journey with SMMA began with his internship in 2018. Now an architectural designer, Zack has shown remarkable talent for models and digital fabrication. His leadership in this area has greatly enhanced our internal design discussions, client presentations, and community workshops. “Zack is a trusted collaborator, communicator, and skilled designer who has taken great strides since joining the firm," says Michael Pardek, Director of Design. "He not only excels in shaping our design work, but also stands out as an engaged young leader in the studio, playing a key role in defining our culture. He is a fantastic representation for our team at SMMA.” Congratulations, Lance and Zack! 🎉
