Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia, AIA co-presented “The Architectonics of Music” at the Meltingpot Forum during the Colours of Ostrava Festival, the largest interdisciplinary forum in Europe with over 30,000 visitors across 10 venues. Illustrating concepts such as ‘notation,’ ‘chance/experiment’, and ‘space: acoustics,’ Steven and Dimitra presented several SHA projects, concluding with the new Ostrava Concert Hall. The concept of a “perfect acoustic instrument in its case” informs the design. The main concert hall, organized in an extended vineyard type plan, is made of maple wood like a great violin and provides ideal acoustics. Ostrava Mayor Jan Dohnal joined them for a discussion about the importance of cultural spaces as a gift to the public. “The reward for us and future generations will be a multifunctional complex unique to the country, offering top-notch acoustics for musical productions, a venue for theatre performances, education, and other leisure activities. The project’s benefits in the fields of culture and architecture are indisputable,” stated Mayor Dohnal. The Ostrava Concert Hall has received over 100 million euros of public funding including grants from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Just Transition Mechanism supporting ecologically innovative projects. “This world-class green architectural endeavor will help to redefine Ostrava's identity, symbolizing its transition from a coal and steel industry hub to a vibrant, modern metropolis with a flourishing cultural and creative sector,” stated Elisa Ferreira, the European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms. The concert hall is geothermally heated and cooled via 120 wells and receives energy from nearly 400 solar panels. Glass walls and skylights infuse the building with natural light and lessen reliance on nonrenewable energy. The building is clad in lightweight zinc, a one hundred percent recyclable material that can flexibly conform to the curved geometry. The Ostrava Concert Hall will become one of the most sustainable buildings in the Czech Republic upon completion in 2028. V pátek 19. července slavnostně začala STAVBA 🎵KONCERNTÍHO SÁLU v Ostravě. Slavnostního ceremoniálu spojeného s 🔨poklepáním základního kamene se zúčastnila řada významných hostů v čele s americkým architektem autorem návrhu budoucí koncertního sálu 👉Stevenem Hollem, prezidentem České republiky 👉Petrem Pavlem či ministrem financí 👉Zbyňkem Stanjurou. Financování stavby proběhne s pomocí grantu Evropské komise ve výši 5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ miliónů korun, úvěru Evropské investiční banky, jež činí 2️⃣ miliardy korun z Úvěrového nástroje pro veřejný sektor, který je součástí mechanismu spravedlivé transformace na podporu bývalých uhelných regionů, dotací Ministerstva kultury ČR ve výši 6️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ miliónů korun a Moravskoslezského kraje. Město zároveň připravuje žádosti o dotace z dalších možných dotačních titulů a rovněž šetří do svého účelového fondu na financování koncertního sálu, který nyní definuje částku 570 milionů korun. June 20, 2024, Steven Holl Architects celebrated summer solstice at L-House, raising a glass with an intimate gathering of friends in the nearly completed live/work building in historic Hudson, New York. Natural light and ventilation are given expression in a vertical light monitor, and the all-wooden interior receives sunlight from all orientations. This is the first geothermally heated and cooled house in Hudson. The planar urban composition is articulated with a south-facing green courtyard and a rain collecting pool. June 27, 2024, Steven Holl will lecture at Acquario Romano, Rome. Titled “Art Drives Architecture,” the lecture chronicles SHA artist collaborations including Walter De Maria for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Vito Acconci for Storefront for Art and Architecture, and most recently Agnieszka Kurant for EXPO Albania. Domus names Kiasma Museum, Helsinki, as one of the top 50 museums to visit in a lifetime. “Kiasma is the first museum designed by Steven Holl, who, up to that point, had only completed a few projects while running a small studio akin to an atelier for conceptual designs and fresh architectural concepts… The building aimed to serve as a catalyst for a new urban configuration, fostering increased foot traffic while providing serene and well-illuminated environments for direct art experiences. Light plays a crucial role in this architecture, particularly given Helsinki’s unique light conditions, which are never constant due to continuous meteorological shifts and are notably horizontal due to its high latitude. The interplay of reflections is often viewed as a means of indirectly guiding natural light.” Since opening in 1998, Kiasma continues to make contemporary art accessible to the public through exhibitions, performances, events, and educational programs while collecting and preserving cultural heritage as part of the Finnish National Gallery.
