“When I was growing up, an organization like this did not exist, and I was one of those kids who really needed it” — the icon Nina West sat down with us to chat about her experience competing to raise money for The Trevor Project on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars ⭐🧡 “I think our allies need to listen to our stories and share them,” says Nina. “They must use their voices to speak for our community in rooms we may not have the ability to fully advocate for ourselves. I also think it is vital that our allies use their voices to show up in the voting booth to ensure our rights are fought for and protected.” Read our full interview with the incredibly bright star that is Nina West 🌈 Thank you Nina for your constant support of LGBTQ+ young people. https://lnkd.in/gZQwHkpE #TheTrevorProject #NinaWest #RuPaulsDragRace #LGBTQ

For Samantha (she/her), her queerness and disability have always been inextricably linked. In honor of Disability Pride Month, Samantha shares her coming out story, only to get diagnosed with POTS just two months later. Owning her sexuality and disability was a journey for Samantha. Finding how they both are key elements of who she is has helped her own her truth. “Talking about my chronic illness has felt like coming out in a way, because of the fear I felt for so long around revealing my true self. In both, I worried constantly about being judged or ostracized. But my sexuality and my disability are critical elements of the whole of me, and I don’t want to hide any longer.” Every single LGBTQ+ disabled young person deserves to have a safe space to share their truth, be affirmed for who they are, and be seen in their diverse experiences. This July, our research team explored climate change concerns, climate change risk, and mental health among LGBTQ+ young people. For the first time, we investigated how climate change plays a role in both the mental and physical health of LGBTQ+ youth, and how intersectionality of identity and location impact climate anxiety 🌍☀️ Among the entire sample of LGBTQ+ young people we surveyed, the majority reported worrying about climate change “a lot”. Climate change worry was related to higher rates of depression and anxiety symptoms. What does this mean? As our environment changes, LGBTQ+ young people are increasingly concerned for the future. Environmental stressors like climate anxiety cause grief, discomfort, and uncertainty. That’s why accessible, comprehensive mental health care is more important than ever for LGBTQ+ youth. Climate justice is an LGBTQ+ issue 🌍🌈 Our most recent research on the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people revealed that climate change is causing increasing alarm amongst queer and trans youth — with a majority reporting that they worry about climate change “a lot”. “Our data show that today’s LGBTQ+ young people are tuned into the world they are inheriting, reporting frequent worries about climate change,” said Dr. Steven Hobaica, a research scientist at the Trevor Project. Together, we will continue to advocate for environmental stressors to be included in comprehensive mental healthcare for LGBTQ+ young people.
