Rebuilding Our Community One Block At A Time. The UJAMAA Way.

About us

Ujamaa Construction (“UJAMAA”) was founded in 2002 by Jimmy Akintonde to create a working organization that pays an equal amount of attention to quality of completed projects, safety of our employees, social responsibility, sustainability, corporate profitability, and citizenship within our communities. He identified a lack of quality construction services that incorporated the community. Before long, UJAMAA experienced explosive growth, eventually opening an office in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017. Time and again, our team proved that socially responsible construction is not a hindrance to timely and professional work. On the contrary, our work has shown that having values rooted in the community only enhances the work we do and our reputation among community members and business owners alike. The company continues to maintain this balance of corporate governance and social responsibility, striving to bring diversity into the workplace and provide employment opportunities to the underserved. We see the faces of the people who are impacted by every successful project we complete – our clients and their employees, their customers who utilize or patronize the facilities, our staff of professionals and subcontractors, and the community as a whole that is enriched by the development and the services it provides. Buildings aren’t just structures; they are robust communities. With social responsibility, innovation, and sustainability as part of our founding principles, we are truly a melting pot of people, ideas, and perspectives. Through empowering our people, we are able to create new possibilities for the world around us. It takes a village to raise a child and a community to build a building. UJAMAA Construction promotes a culture of trust, learning, collaboration, and innovation. Our team will bring the right principles, structure, and tools to facilitate the type of culture that will contribute significantly to the success of the projects we execute.

Last week, Superintendent Devonta Elzy had a full circle moment leading a tour of the #ObamaPresidentialCenter project site for local teens participating in After School Matters' new CCS program for carpentry students: one of the program managers was Devonta’s very own high school carpentry teacher! Thank you to the students in attendance for bringing your curiosity and passion to the site. It was an honor to host you! #TeamOPC #LakesideAlliance

Yesterday, UJAMAA Construction hosted a contractor outreach event at Lively Stone MB Church for the Austin HOPE Center project. This outreach is an integral part of our mission to make the project as reflective of the community as possible. Why is this significant? Because the Austin HOPE Center is more than just a healthcare facility; it's a beacon of empowerment, representation, and community spirit. This remarkable joint venture between Stone Community Development Corporation and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago will bring essential healthcare services and a vibrant community hub to the Austin neighborhood. With both the design and construction teams being Black-owned, we are exemplifying empowerment and representation at every level. The center's name, chosen by the children of Austin, instills a profound sense of ownership and belonging. This isn't just a building—it's a testament to the collective dreams and aspirations of the community. By involving local contractors, we're not only building structures but also bridges—bridges of collaboration, trust, and shared vision. At UJAMAA Construction, we believe in the power of community and the long-term impact of sustainable development. Our journey with the Austin HOPE Center is a journey towards a brighter, healthier future for all. Join us in celebrating this remarkable step forward! #TheUJAMAAWay #CommunityBuilding #SustainableDevelopment #Empowerment #AustinHOPECenter #UJAMAAConstruction #BlackOwnedBusiness #HealthcareInnovation #CollaborativeFuture #LocalImpact

We are thrilled to announce that UJAMAA Construction South East and Turner Construction Company have been honored with the Award of Excellence from ABC of Georgia for our outstanding work on the Concourse T-Midpoint Vertical Expansion project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport! Under the ATLNext initiative, our team collaborated to enhance vertical circulation at Concourse T, crucial for accommodating increased passenger and employee traffic accessing the Plane Train Concourse T station. This project involved adding escalators, elevators, and modernizing existing infrastructure to meet growing demands seamlessly. One of our major challenges was ensuring the protection and efficiency of trench work and fuel line relocation, particularly during inclement weather. Through innovative thinking and collaboration, we developed a lightweight, waterproofed panel solution that proved incredibly effective in securing critical infrastructure against flooding and erosion risks. We extend our heartfelt thanks to ABC of Georgia for recognizing our dedication to excellence in construction and innovation. This award underscores our commitment to delivering quality and efficiency in every project we undertake. Special thanks to our partners, Turner Construction Company and the entire UJAMAA Construction team, whose hard work and expertise made this achievement possible. #AwardOfExcellence #ATLNext #ConstructionInnovation #Teamwork #UJAMAAConstruction #TheUJAMAAWay #TurnerConstruction #HartsfieldJackson #ABCofGeorgia

Earlier this week, members of the UJAMAA Construction team had the pleasure of attending the 4th Annual Black Contractors Owners and Executives (BCOE) Golf Outing. It was an incredible experience mixing and mingling with industry peers, reinforcing our commitment to community and collaboration. This outing is more than just a day on the golf course—it’s a pivotal event that raises money for scholarships for the youth annually, creating long-term impact and empowering the next generation. We are thrilled to share that UJAMAA had the lucky table, and everyone walked away with something from the raffle!
