Last week, VTSU Johnson co-hosted Vermont’s annual Disease and Wildlife Ecology Symposium, which featured work showcased by four Vermont State University students from Castleton and Johnson campuses. Deacon Watson, a VTSU Castleton student, shared, ‘It is great to collaborate with my fellow peers and present our research in a meaningful forum. Undergrads often don’t get these opportunities, so this is fantastic!’ The symposium emerged from a Disease and Wildlife Thematic Interest Group formed through the Vermont Biomedical Research Network

Last week, the Center for Social Justice and Trauma Informed Care hosted a First Responder Wellness Conference at VTSU Castleton. Through wellness activities like yoga, therapeutic fly tying, and nature walks, along with workshops and speakers, participants were able to work through common stigmas that often make dealing with mental health and trauma difficult for first responders. This week, VTSU Johnson students Ethan Kile '24 and Willow Albee '26, traveled with Professor Gina Mireault to Washington DC to present the latest findings from their lab to the National Institutes of Health

On July 9th, DRACO nano (Dynamic Research of Arctic Cryospheric Organisms at the nanoscale) flew out with the Air National Guard to do field research in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. VTSU Williston and Randolph-based faculty members Dr. Ross Lieblappen and Dr. Michelle Sama, along with undergraduates Caleb Tilton and Dominic Mazzilli, and recent Lyndon Institute graduate Una Colby are spending fifteen days collecting permafrost cores, which will allow them to image the cores for their microbes in-situ, create DNA libraries, and examine genes of interest. This is part two of the team’s sampling as they collected cores in Fairbanks, Alaska in early June as well. By utilizing advancements in X-ray imaging, DRACO nano will achieve non-destructive images of permafrost at the nanoscale. These will be the first images of permafrost to exist at this scale! As VTSU Castleton prepares to host softball state finals this weekend and other sports continue winding down, we encourage graduating high school student-athletes to consider one of our great varsity or club programs! At VTSU, we maintain the proud traditions of our individual campus teams and their mascots. Our sports facilities are excellent and VTSU offers the unique opportunity for student-athletes to play multiple sports. We also compete at a high level! This past year, we had teams and individual student-athletes win national championships, conference titles, and many other prestigious awards! Last week, we announced that Max, a popular cat that wanders onto our Castleton campus regularly, was being awarded an honorary ‘doctor of litter-ature’ degree during our social media countdown to Commencement Weekend. The news quickly spread around the state and appeared in local media coverage. By Friday, NPR and the Associated Press picked up the happy story and articles began appearing in news outlets around the world.
