🙋♀️ Celebrating the Journey of Women in ASHRAE 🫶 From humble beginnings to a powerful movement! On January 26, 2015, at 7 am, the first Women in ASHRAE Breakfast took place in a small dark corner room at the Palmer House in Chicago. With Thomas Phoenix as the Society President and the brilliant minds of Katherine Hammack and Jennifer Leach behind this initiative, 25 women gathered to pave the way for change. (The proof is in the attached pictures) 📸 Fast forward to today, and we continuously have over 150 women attending this breakfast at the Society Conference. This extraordinary growth is a testament to the dedication and passion of our community. The idea for a Women in ASHRAE leadership conference sparked when Nancy Kohout P.E. LEED AP and I met at a Chicago chapter meeting where I was invited to speak as a Distinguished Lecturer. Nancy said, "I wish we could have our own Women in ASHRAE leadership conference." I immediately responded, "I love this idea and I can help you with that," and the journey began. After countless hours of planning, advocating, and assembling a dedicated committee, we are thrilled to announce the first-ever Women in ASHRAE Leadership Symposium! This premiere event is set for September 26-27 in Chicago, featuring an amazing lineup of speakers and topics that promise inspiration, empowerment, and game-changing strategies. Erys and I had a fantastic day exploring the exhibition and listening to as many of the talks as we could get to. Erys felt like a VIP meeting the “celebrities” of the Heating and Cooling World (I talk a lot about the inspiring people around me) as well as Rachel Riley and Maira Bana - a real life kick ass engineer - what a treat that was. Last month I had the opportunity to celebrate World Refrigeration Day® incorporating World Heatpumps Day 2024 at the InstallerSHOW in Birmingham England with Mr WRD himself Mr. Stephen Gill! Just reflecting on the day of women's events which was one of the clear higlights in the Climate Solutions Theatre at InstallerSHOW. Hearing so many different stories over the course of a day was impressive in its own right - but the fact that there was representation from so many different sectors of heating, cooling and plumbing and at so many levels, from apprentices to bosses, was inspirational. Several themes stood out: the importance of sharing experiences; seeking out buddies and mentors; and calling out outdated behaviour or attitudes. Part of the reason for a repost is also to try to name all the other panelists, who all played an important part in the day. And, as well as planning for more at the next InstallerSHOW, let's work out how to build on this platform throughout the year. So, thanks to all the panelists I didn't mention in the first post: you were all inspirational: Angela Rushforth, Zoë Tanner, Celia Matthews, Gail Parker, Leah Robson, Sophie Maguire, Karen Boot, Rebecca Shuck, Sianna Lays and Kimmy The Sparks. The AIRAH IAQ Conference is off to great start. With a call to action from Brendan Crabb of the Burnet Institute followed by a fantastic presentation from Sonia Holzheimer - bringing her years of experience in designing for hot, humid climates to explain how climate change is making humidity an important issue for all of us.
