We are incredibly proud of WEA team members Daniela Perez and Laura Vigil Escalera Mier for shining a light on how many women environmental defenders face gendered, racial, ethnic discrimination and violence. In their recent Ms. Magazine article, they share that the women leaders they have met through WEA's programs are incredibly resilient and continue to step forward to answer the needs arising in their regions. "Women’s leadership is crucial for addressing the climate crisis. Their work is critical to preserving the health of the land, water and communities that surround them, yet they face immense danger. Of the 67 women environmental defenders killed globally between 2020 and 2022, 11 were Mexican, and nearly half were Indigenous." "In the heart of Indonesia's Leuser Ecosystem, Indigenous women are taking action to defend and conserve their ancestral lands and lifeways." In this beautiful new blog post, WEA Global Program Manager, Hannah Adams, shares about the inspiring women of Aceh and how they are best positioned to generate lasting and transformative change for the villages and habitats of Leuser through strategies like economic development. In partnership with Yayasan Katahati (Katahati Institute), the women of Aceh are implementing and scaling community-driven solutions to protect the Leuser Ecosystem through the Indonesia Advocacy and Entrepreneurship Program. The program builds the capacity of local women leaders and women-led groups at the intersection of human rights, economic livelihoods, environmental resilience, and movement-building in order to prevent ecological destruction and create healthier, more climate-resilient communities in Leuser. #climatesolutions #womenleaders #indonesia #together #leuser https://lnkd.in/guA_iYDX

Did you know there are things we can do to reduce toxins from the environment? WEA U.S. Accelerator Leader, Dr. Rasheeda Hawk, PhD, is the Director of Seeds of Carver Urban Farm — an Urban Farm Collective that grows food and offers education for local community members and youth in South L.A. Seeds of Carver Urban Farm is also researching bioremediation methods to naturally detoxify soil by using plants and microbiomes to remove toxins. WEA is thrilled to announce that this August, we will join together with Seeds of Carver for “Black Girls, Green Futures” — a hands on project and mentorship to empower the leadership of 20 middle- and high-school aged Black girls and youth in South L.A. to restore their local environment, improve community health, and increase access to education and career opportunities in environmental science and climate justice. Today, communities in the Northern Hemisphere celebrate the #Summersolstice. As with every turning of the season, this is often a reflective period—one where we take stock of the seeds we planted that have begun to sprout, before shifting into a season of carefully tending that growth.⁠ ⁠ As we welcome in a new season—one of re-opening in multiple ways—we recognize that this original care economy and the grassroots women who ensure it thrives has made us ever more resilient. Today and everyday, the Earth is our teacher, reminding us that resiliency is a process and tending to our garden requires patience, reciprocity, and community. ⁠ ⁠ So as we honor the Summer Solstice, we're taking with us these words by United States Poet Laureate, musician and author Joy Harjo (Mvskoke/Creek Nation), and are grateful to be in relationship with the Earth.

WEA's virtual press briefing last week aimed at amplifying the crucial work of women climate leaders worldwide and underscored the importance of responsible media coverage that recognizes women’s expertise and agency in leading environmental action, addresses and reframes harmful and/or victimizing narratives, and safeguards their safety as media sources. Globally, it is recognized that women’s leadership is crucial for addressing the climate crisis. Are you a reporter or journalist...or know one? On June 12, 12pm ET, Women's Earth Alliance is hosting “Voices Unearthed: Shifting the Narrative on Women Grassroots Leaders in the Climate Movement,” a virtual press briefing that will provide guidance on responsible media practices to accurately portray women’s roles in environmental action; showcase the impactful work of grassroots women climate leaders; and discuss the challenges and risks these women face and how journalists can support their safety while amplifying their voices effectively. As the world faces a growing climate crisis, women are at the forefront, particularly in the most environmentally threatened regions. Despite their significant leadership in climate adaptation and mitigation, their voices are often underrepresented and misrepresented in the media. On average, between 2017 and 2021, approximately just one in four (27%) of voices quoted in online climate change news belonged to women. Worse so, stories published on climate change and environmental stewardship often include problematic framing of women that fails to accurately reflect their roles in creating positive and impactful change. Because the language we use, and the framing of the stories we tell have a profound impact on public understanding and attitudes towards various issues—and that then informs national and international development and investment practices—it’s critical we actively seek to correct these narratives together.
