Advice for Aspiring Future Executives: Commitments to Diversity In 2017 my company sponsored tables at the Watermark Conference for Women, an effort to promote diversity in leadership. “Robert,” a VP on our division’s exec staff, recruited both leading women to attend and VPs to be the leader at each table. I was enthusiastic when asked to be a table exec. Robert also signed up a senior VP “Jack” and VP members of Jack’s staff to join. The Watermark Conference was amazing. Viola Davis gave a moving testimonial about her life and career. Madeline Albright and Condoleezza Rice formed a panel discussing global affairs. I chatted with the leaders at my table about their roles and experiences. However, something curious occurred just before the conference. Jack found he was too busy and decided not to attend. The members of Jack’s staff quickly found they were too busy also. There was no fallout towards the last-minute VP cancelers. Yet their lack of commitment was plainly evident. The takeaway: Stand by your own sense of decency. A few hours away from the office won’t harm your career, but canceling on a group of leaders will cement a poor opinion of you in their minds.

4500 Fab Jobs Could Go Unfilled in U.S. by 2030 The CHIPS Act won't work without a lot more workers In 2022, the CHIPS Act pledged $39 billion of U.S. federal government subsidies to build semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Not all the funding has been allocated, but the Act has already catalyzed at least $300 billion in private investment. As a result, U.S. fab capacity could triple between 2022 and 2032. If this relatively rapid buildup pans out, it will mark U.S. semiconductor manufacturing’s first meaningful expansion since the 1980s — and place considerable strain on a workforce that is already suffering attrition. https://lnkd.in/dhXVXAKv

What are your company’s priorities? Most publicly traded companies cater to three distinct constituencies: Shareholders, Customers and Employees. Inevitably, these constituencies will get prioritized based on the values of the company as well as the desires and guidance of their executive teams and Board of Directors. Let’s take a quick look at each one.   The first is the company that places its shareholders first. These companies will typically place ROI, revenue generation and share value as their top priority, with customers coming in second and employees last. Companies with this priority may be successful in the short term but this emphasis eventually catches up with them as their product quality begins to suffer (needing to cut costs as much as possible to increase revenue) and as employees don’t feel valued, they tend to also have high employee turnover, which, ironically ends up costing them. Look no further than what has been happening at Boeing recently as a good example.   The second kind of company will prioritize customers above all else, with shareholders coming in second and employees last. These companies are characterized as having good but expensive products combined with (sometimes) lower ROI and revenue. Their intense focus on customers and their needs can place a great deal of stress on their employees as they are pushed hard to support customer requests no matter what they are - at any time, day or night, after work hours or even weekends. As a result of this, these kinds of companies struggle with high employee turnover and low morale. Staffing departments in these companies are always struggling to back fill jobs left behind by unhappy employees. Back fill requisitions in these companies can typically be up to 80% of the total number of their open positions.   The third kind of company is the employee-centric company that places its employees at the top of their priority list. These companies believe in the principle that Herb Kelleher (Southwest Airlines’ first CEO) espoused: Companies that treat their employees well will create great products, provide excellent customer service and as a result, increase company value year after year with minimal employee turnover. Sadly, these kinds of companies are few (you can find many of them are featured in the Best Companies to Work for lists). A good example that springs to mind in this category is Costco. Next time you visit a Costco, ask an employee “What’s it like to work here?” and prepare yourself for 20 minutes of them telling you about all the positive aspects of working there. We know employees at our local Costco that have been there for 30 years or more. Financially, Costco has been very successful and I’m confident that if they keep their employees at the top of their priority list, they will continue on that path.   So, what is your company's top constituency?

Proposed CHIPS Investment of up to $6.4 Billion Would Complement More than $40 Billion in Private Investment to Support a Comprehensive Semiconductor Cluster for Leading-Edge Logic, Advanced Packaging, and R&D in Taylor, Texas, and Expansion of Austin Fab in Texas Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Samsung Electronics (Samsung) have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $6.4 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, advance U.S. technology leadership, and fuel U.S. global competitiveness. Samsung – the only leading-edge semiconductor company that is a leader in both advanced memory and advanced logic technologies – is expected to invest more than $40 billion dollars in the region in the coming years, and the proposed investment would support the creation of over 20,000 jobs. The proposed investment would turn Samsung’s existing presence in Texas into a comprehensive ecosystem for the development and production of leading-edge chips in the United States, including two new leading-edge logic fabs, an R&D fab, and an advanced packaging facility in Taylor, as well as an expansion to their existing Austin facility. It also demonstrates Samsung’s ongoing commitment to the United States, where it has been manufacturing chips since 1996. By continuing to develop the technologies of the future in the United States, Samsung is taking steps that would work towards strengthening U.S. economic and national security and increasing the resilience of both the U.S. and global semiconductor supply chains. Because of investments like Samsung’s, the United States is projected to be on track to produce roughly 20% of the world’s leading-edge logic chips by 2030. https://lnkd.in/e_JH_qtN
