Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.

The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.

Position Summary

This recruitment is for three (3) Assistant Professor positions. By applying, you will be considered for all three (3) positions:

The Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for three accomplished professionals with experience and expertise in advertising, public relations, and/or visual communication or other areas related to media technology and innovation to join our faculty as a Creative/Professional tenure track Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025.

To be appointed as an Assistant Professor on the tenure-track, competitive candidates should have a creative/professional background and area of focus in their industry. They will be expected to directly aid students and support the university through teaching; academic and professional presentations; creative projects and/or research; mentoring, and service to the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. The selected candidate(s) will teach five (5) semester-long courses (a 2-3 or 3-2 load) per 9-month academic year (fall/spring) and will help to expand our course offerings as needed. Although most courses will be taught in person, interest in teaching online is expected.

Candidates may also offer ideas for new courses they could develop in their area of expertise. The successful candidate will serve on school and university committees, as well as take part in the ongoing activities of the school. In addition to helping with the variety of service requirements to keep the school successfully moving forward, the candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and master’s students and provide them with relevant professional networking opportunities.

As there are three positions, we invite applicants from many backgrounds or professional areas. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach undergraduate and/or professional master’s students skills needed in the following areas and/or topics (in alphabetical order): Account Coordinator, Advertising Creative, Advertising Campaigns, Advertising Strategy, Artificial Intelligence, (Media) Business Analysis, Content Management, Corporate Communications, Creative Strategy, Design Associate, Digital Marketing, Graphic Design, Investor Relations, Marketing and Events, Media Consultancy, Multimedia, Motion Graphics, Public Relations Campaigns, Public Relations Case Studies, Public Relations Writing, Social Media Design or Strategy, UI, UX, Video (Creative, Corporate or Digital/Ad/PR).

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Master’s degree or another terminal degree in the same or closely related discipline as the courses taught is required. An earned terminal degree may be substituted by relevant professional experience or by a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Meaningful and significant industry or professional experience.
