Portland Monthly is looking for an associate editor to join our team. This editor is responsible for managing coverage of the Eat & Drink vertical while also contributing to the magazine’s other sections, including News & City Life. In this role, the associate editor will pitch and write articles, track the city’s news for online stories and explainers, manage our evergreen program, and contribute to feature packages for pdxmonthly.com and the quarterly print magazine. This candidate should have a clear sense of perspective, identifying trends and finding the larger story in the deluge of daily news. A strong candidate has a solid grasp of journalism best practices, is passionate about the city’s food scene, and understands Portland Monthly’s brand and voice. The ideal candidate is immersed in Portland’s restaurant world, devours food writing on a local and national level, relies on a strong journalism foundation, and is dedicated to using food as a lens to cover the city in a creative and responsible way. 


This is a full-time remote-first position based in Portland, Oregon. Currently the team meets in-person one day per week and the successful candidate will be located in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Generate story ideas for the food section, from restaurant openings and service packages to deeply reported stories
  • Contribute to, edit, and update the food vertical’s evergreen stories and roundups, including our annual best restaurants package
  • Track Portland news beats for potential explainers and relevant online articles, as well as stories for our quarterly Dispatch section in the print magazine
  • Write for both the online site and print publication, including interviewing sources and doing on-the-ground reporting
  • Discover and cultivate sources within Portland’s food and beverage world to cover the beat responsibly and thoughtfully
  • Assign and edit freelancer stories
  • Dine out at restaurants and bars for reviews and story research (this position comes with a dining budget)
  • Collaborate with editorial and art team members to further improve and elevate Portland Monthly’s coverage


Qualifications:

  • 3 years+ of journalism and/or food writing experience in a fast-paced publishing environment, i.e. a newspaper or online outlet, particularly covering restaurants or a city’s food industry
  • Knowledge of CMS and project management tools
  • Deep commitment to personal and journalistic ethics
  • Experience using data and analytics to help inform editorial coverage
  • Comfort with meeting strict editorial deadlines 
  • Independence and self-motivation
  • Strong editing, writing, and storytelling skills 
  • Familiarity with SEO and creative formats in digital publishing 
  • Attention to detail, with an eye for accuracy 
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Experience with Wrike, Chicago Style


Compensation:


The base compensation range for this role is $55,000-$60,000, depending on experience. The annual/hourly pay range displayed serves as a good faith estimate of the minimum and maximum base pay range for this role. Compensation for the role will be based on a number of different factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience.
