We are hiring for a Corporate Director of HR Operations to join our team in the Bay Area! This position is responsible for overseeing HR Operations across the Transforming Age network and for day-to-day HR oversight for communities in California. Reporting to the VP of People, the Director of HR Operations will focus on HR compliance, P&Ps, as well as creating and implementing HR strategies and programs, with the overall goal to make Transforming Age the employer of choice in aging services. This position also serves as the hands-on HR Director for the HQ and service center teams.


Included in this role is management of day-to-day HR programs, processes, projects and policies, while developing and implementing the same related to all aspects of HR Operations for team members across Transforming Age, as well as oversight of HR support for California communities, requiring deep California-specific HR regulatory knowledge. This role will focus on day-to-day operational needs to drive HR strategies and programs, with the overall goal to be the employer of choice in senior living and community-based services. This position is primarily a remote role, with on-site presence required at our service center in Alameda or at our California communities as needed. Travel to locations outside California will also be required occasionally as needed.



Our Corporate Director of HR Operations:


  • Accountable for the development, implementation, monitoring, and measuring of HR strategies and processes related to HR Operations, including HR compliance.
  • Directly oversee the alignment and integration of new affiliates to Transforming Age HR practices, including but not limited to recruiting, onboarding, offboarding, training, performance management, benefits, compensation, employee relations, coaching and corrective action, leaves of absence, COBRA and compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Manages development, coaching, guidance, compliance, and oversight of HR practices in California, as well as for California-based team members with HR responsibilities.
  • Effectively and efficiently collects, organizes and analyzes data to identify trends, and then recommends, develops and implements solutions to improve processes, team member engagement, performance, retention and organization performance.
  • Updates and maintains California-specific HR policies and procedures, as well as maintains the Transforming Age Associates team member handbook.
  • Proposes policies, programs and process improvements for best-in-class HR operations and HR compliance.
  • Acts as subject matter expert and manages processes and policies, as well as executing on matters related to employee relations and investigations, leave management, workers compensation and unemployment claims.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations related to employment, benefits, compensation, leaves of absence, EEO, PTO, termination, and more. Creates and maintains a local/state/federal HR compliance resource.
  • Manages quarterly audits and related correction plans – continue at CA sites and implement at sites outside CA – including the management of the HR audit tool and related components.
  • Operates as an active member of Risk Management and Compliance team, with dotted-line reporting relationship to Transforming Age’s General Counsel.
  • Performs investigations at the direction of VP of People, and in coordination with General Counsel and Compliance Officer.
  • Is proficient in analyzing and interpreting HR data and analytics across the team member lifecycle, and then rapidly operationalizes improvements.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with vendors and external partners.
  • Is accountable for proposing and managing the HR budget for California and HQ HR in collaboration VP of People
  • Builds solid cross-functional relationships with leadership across the Transforming Age network, with an emphasis on close collaboration and communication with the Operations team.
  • Demonstrates Transforming Age’s values and the Culture of Excellence; leads by example.
  • Leads internal delivery and adoption of best practices within scope of responsibility.
  • Has superior written and verbal communication skills and exceptionally detail-oriented.
  • Is comfortable presenting in-person and virtually to all levels of the organization and to large groups.
  • Performs other duties / projects as needed.


What you need to succeed:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field highly preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible, HR management experience, preferably with four or more years at a Director level.
  • At least five years of experience managing five or more direct reports.
  • At least five years of experience leading an HR function supporting 800 or more team members.
  • Senior Human Resources certification (SHRM-SCP or SPHR) preferred.
  • Comprehensive HR generalist background is required. Direct work experience in these disciplines of Human Resources: onboarding, benefits, compensation, HR compliance, investigations, policy creation and implementation, performance management, leaves of absence, staffing and recruiting, and employee relations, HRIS, HR analytics, learning and development, leadership development, EEO, ADAAA.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal employment laws and regulations within the states that TA operates, with special focus on California.
  • Must have a thorough understanding and comfort using People analytics and HRIS platforms.
  • Ability to develop and deliver HR scorecards to help identify workforce trends and to support the business.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively and simultaneously manage multiple projects for multiple locations, while producing and communicating results.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large-scale projects from conception to implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and to develop and maintain effective relationships with executive team members, team members and business partners at all levels.
  • Must be creative, resourceful and flexible in response to the environment of a growing organization.
  • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with strong proficiency using MS 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint) and various technology applications.
  • Ability to represent the company effectively in a variety of settings with a demonstrated understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures.
  • Ability to develop, analyze, and interpret business policies, procedures, training materials, and communications.
  • Ability to effectively advocate ideas and influence internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively develop and deliver content in a polished and professional manner for small and large audiences at all levels, and for remote and in-person settings.
  • Ability to effectively plan, set priorities, and manage complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines and achieve business results.
  • Ability to compose professional internal and external business communications including reports, presentations, proposals, memos, letters, and e-mails.
