Position Overview:


The Fire Protection Engineer will be working as part of the Fire Protection team designing systems in the various DOE facilities. Prepare technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, providing construction support and preparing specifications for complex mechanical equipment and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in fire protection system design and construction; and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, which incorporate the applicable design requirements. The candidate shall have a working knowledge of the IBC and NFPA standards including but not limited to NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 801, NFPA 101, and NFPA 241. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering/construction disciplines and the client in the development of the design and installation of the systems. Experience in design, procurement, and installation of fire protection equipment per DOE and National Standards is required.

Location: This position will require you to be onsite at either location; Lenexa, KS or Oak Ridge, TN.


Responsibilities Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering related to fire protection design for multiple projects. Ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems. Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices but may also include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and/or difficult coordination requirements.


Job Description: Planning, coordinating, or preparing equipment or work specifications, evaluations, and award recommendations for equipment including but not limited to: Develop and revise piping and instrument diagrams, formal calculations, and equipment datasheets and specifications in completing the detailed design for the system, including equipment selection. Design the system and specify the equipment to meet the applicable requirements. Procure the equipment in accordance with applicable QA requirements. In addition, it will be required that the candidate prepare communications to vendors and clients, review bid analyses and make recommendations, and prepare or assist in the preparation of studies, designs, reports, or proposals. Perform or assist in the performance of problem analysis and original design. Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs, and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts, and change orders. Review and disposition of field change notices and non-conformance reports. Review the coordination and status of vendor submittals. Provide construction support for all phases of the project in conjunction with NFPA 801 and 241 requirements. Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction. Lead the associated safety analyses and hazard evaluations. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).


Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited university with a minimum of 7 years of related experience.

• Professional Engineers license in Fire Protection Engineering

• Previous experience in preliminary, front-end fire protection design and equipment selection for nuclear, nuclear chemical facilities, and nuclear waste processing.

• Nuclear experience in working within DOE facilities and working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1 or equivalent.

• Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards, broad knowledge of the application of Fire Protection engineering design principles.

• Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement • Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods.

• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e. word, excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
