Position Overview

The ETL Developer/Engineer will play a pivotal role in supporting the IRS data warehousing initiatives. This role involves the design, implementation, and maintenance of the ETL processes to extract data from various source systems, transform it according to business rules and load it into the data warehouse. The successful candidate will collaborate with various teams including data architects, business analysts, and data quality specialists to ensure that data is accurate, consistent, and available for business users.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development

  • The primary duties involve moving data/tables from Unix operating systems and performing the required extract, transformation, and loading operations (ETL) to data/tables to Sybase IQ.
  • This process may include refactoring jobs in entirely new ways by:
    • Providing users support and documentation on moving data into Sybase IQ and providing metadata for the metadata repository.
    • Provide development of an object-oriented style UNIX-based framework and engine of scripts and stored procedures that will execute and monitor multiple ETL processes and statistic processes.
    • A successful candidate will have the ability to troubleshoot errors in shell and SQL, configure own SSH client and operate across servers.
    • Participate in Scrum and client meetings, create documents, and update Kanban board cards.
Optimization and Performance

  • Optimize ETL processes to ensure data is processed efficiently and quickly.
  • Monitor ETL jobs and address any performance bottlenecks.

Data Quality

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of data through validation, cleansing, and auditing.
  • Work closely with the Data Quality team to address any data inconsistencies or issues.

Collaboration and Documentation

  • Collaborate with Data Architects to design data models and schemas that meet business needs.
  • Work with Business Analysts to understand transformation requirements.
  • Document ETL processes, workflows, and data dictionaries for transparency and future reference.

Troubleshooting and Support

  • Address any failures in the ETL processes and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Provide support to business users and address any data-related queries or issues.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay updated with the latest ETL techniques and tools.
  • Recommend and implement improvements in ETL processes and infrastructure.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment: Work performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with staff and customers.

  • Must be US Citizen and hold a Public Trust, or ability to attain a Public Trust.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity for office machine operation; stooping, bending to handle files and supplies, mobility to complete errands or deliveries. Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time. Stress can be triggered by multiple demands and deadlines.

Qualifications

Level II

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.

[7-12] years of experience in ETL development, preferably with SQL, with a focus on the load, select, and update commands.

A successful candidate must have knowledge of the following tools:

  • Linux/Unix Shell scripting
  • Sybase DB
  • Sybase Scripting
  • Postgres DB
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Familiar With The Following Tools

  • DBeaver, Visual Studio, SecureCRT, SecureFX, Gitlab, Jira, Wiki, JSON
  • Informatica, SAP Data Services
  • (KSH, BASH, SH) tools like sed, awk, and Perl
