Flare Therapeutics

Senior Scientist/Principal/Senior Principal Scientist, Cheminformatics/ML

Flare Therapeutics Cambridge, MA

Flare Therapeutics is a biotechnology company pioneering a new therapeutic space with a novel approach to decipher the biology of transcription factors to develop small molecule medicines. Based on insights from the seminal work of its scientific founders, Flare’s team has uncovered ‘switch sites,’ druggable regions that are key targets for transcription factor regulation, to address mutations that cause disease. Flare’s drug discovery efforts to target switch sites has rapidly advanced, resulting in an emerging pipeline of research programs that address well-validated genetically-defined transcription factors, initially focused on precision oncology with future potential in neurology, rare genetic disorders, immunology and inflammation.

We are a collective of brilliant fires, trailblazing a path to conquer transcription factors and create cutting-edge medicines for patients. We embrace diversity in all its forms, experiences, and viewpoints. We are inspired by the unknown and willing to take risks. We are passionate about the science we pursue and compassionate about the patients it stands to benefit. And we respect, value, and believe in each other.

In this role you will…

  • Provide scientific leadership in cheminformatics and applied machine learning capabilities in the Flare Discovery group
  • Build up Flare’s cheminformatics and machine learning capabilities which will be applied in library design, hit identification, prioritization and hit-to-lead progression and help advance our lead optimization projects towards the clinic. This will include implementing machine learning methods for physicochemical property predictions as well as ADME/PK/tox endpoints.
  • Work with research informatics and data teams to deploy enterprise-level cheminformatics and machine learning solutions across the discovery and medicinal chemistry groups.
  • Oversee and own research data integration across the Flare Discovery group
  • In partnership with the Data Science team, manage bioassay data integration into the Flare data management platform (supporting early hit finding through DC candidate identification) and help lab scientists analyze and report project data efficiently.
  • Guide the design of compound-focused data analysis dashboards to enable multiparameter optimization and comprehensive decision-making in lead optimization.
  • Act as the primary point of contact between the discovery research organization and scientific computing, computational biology, and data science teams.

About you…

  • You have a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline with at least three years of experience working in the biotech or pharma environment.
  • You have demonstrated expertise with cheminformatics (e.g., RDKit, OEChem) and data science toolkits/libraries (e.g., Pandas, Scikit-Learn, Chemprop, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • You have a solid understanding of molecule-property data and predictive model quality; expertise in data analytics and a solid grasp of statistical principles.
  • You bring strong scientific programming skills (Python) and create production-level code. Familiarity with other programming languages is a plus.
  • You have experience building data visualizations and dashboards (e.g., in Spotfire, Streamlit, Plotly, DataWarrior).
  • You may have familiarity with scientific workflow systems (e.g., KNIME, Revvity Signals, GeneData) as well as experience in using quantum chemical methods for structure-property modelling.
  • You have the ability to efficiently communicate and collaborate with various departments within the company and with external partners, excellent organizational skills, and a keen attention to detail.
