Utilidata is a fast-growing energy technology company using distributed artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the clean energy transition and better serve utility customers. As the electric grid becomes more complex with the rapid increase of electric vehicles, distributed solar, batteries, heat pumps and extreme weather, utilities need real-time visibility of grid conditions. Utilidata’s distributed AI platform, powered by our custom NVIDIA module, is transforming the way utility companies operate with real-time visibility at the grid edge to better utilize customer energy resources, reduce power outages, and enable quicker storm recovery.

The VP, Engineering plays a pivotal role as a senior level team member responsible for leading the design and development of our distributed AI platform. This role will be responsible for direct mentorship and management of Engineering Directors and oversee a team of 15+ developers, as well as outside services that support the organization’s development priorities. This role will report to the Chief Technology Officer and work closely with the VP, Technical Operations, VP, Product, Algorithms Director, and Principal Engineering Architect, as well as the broader senior leadership team. We are looking for candidates who are collaborative, adaptive and mission-driven. This is a remote position based in the United States. Candidates will be expected to collaborate cross-functionally with remote teams based across the country.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a diverse team of developers through direct management of Engineering Directors, fostering a culture of collaboration and adaptability that encourages knowledge sharing, creativity, and continuous improvement
  • Develop and manage program increment release plans that provide clear engineering direction, test strategy, and tracking to deliver agreed-upon product capabilities
  • Work closely with executive leadership to align engineering outcomes with overarching business goals
  • In collaboration with the Director, IT & Cybersecurity, maintain security threat analysis on all software product components and resolve all critical issues
  • Provide clear direction and reasoning for development and design decisions, ensuring alignment with business objectives
  • Navigate technical challenges efficiently, providing effective leadership to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly
  • Direct, review and maintain architecture, technical stack, and roadmap diagrams in Confluence
  • Collaborate with the People Team to attract top talent, facilitate effective onboarding, and implement strategies for talent retention
  • Optimize resource allocation, budgeting, and timelines to ensure efficient project delivery and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop, maintain, and regularly report on success metrics that measure the team’s progress and contributions to overall organizational objectives
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of time
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10-15+ years of professional experience, including a proven track record of leading and managing the design and development of enterprise-level software
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a skilled and engaged team of software developers
  • Experience scaling software in a startup environment
  • Experience with IoT and/or remote hardware with embedded software
  • Thorough understanding of full stack technologies and development, demonstrating a comprehensive grasp of industry best practices
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative work style, fostering an environment of psychological safety, open communication and idea exchange
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software and hardware solutions on time and within budget
Salary Range: $215,000 - $265,000 depending on experience

Location: This position can be performed remotely from anywhere in the United States.
