🎓🌟 The Rising Challenge of College Costs: Empowering Access to Education 💸✨ The cost of college education has skyrocketed, making it increasingly challenging for many aspiring scholars to afford. From tuition fees to various expenses like transportation, room and board, and lab fees, the financial burden has intensified. Did you know? There's a significant disparity in private scholarships, with Caucasian students 40% more likely to secure them compared to minorities. Shockingly, minorities receive only about 28% of all scholarships, hindering equitable access to educational opportunities. At Ottis Lee Johnson Scholarship Fund, we're committed to leveling the playing field. Join our mission to empower aspiring scholars from diverse backgrounds and bridge this gap in scholarship accessibility. 🌐 Visit www.oljscholarshipfund.org to learn how you can support equal opportunities in education! 📚 🎓 #AccessToEducation #EqualOpportunities #ScholarshipEquality #EducationForAll #OttisLeeJohnsonScholarshipFund

➡ Higher education stands as a cornerstone for personal growth and economic development in our society. However, accessibility remains a challenge due to financial constraints. #theAffilaGroup recognizes the importance of making higher education accessible to all, understanding that initiatives like increased financial aid and community partnerships are essential for overcoming these barriers and fostering equity. ➡ As advocates for accessibility, we've worked diligently to represent all 30 SUNY community colleges in the state during the Fiscal Year 2024 budget negotiations. Our collaboration with the Hochul administration led to crucial amendments, ensuring that proposed policies did not disadvantage these colleges. ➡ We successfully maintained the Funding Floor, securing approximately $416 million in funding for SUNY community colleges to provide consistent support compared to the previous year. Additionally, our efforts secured an extra $8 million for operating assistance, further bolstering the $416 million allocated for higher education in our state. Through these initiatives, we strive to empower individuals and contribute to a more prosperous and inclusive society in #NewYork #HigherEducation #CommunityColleges #NyEducation #SUNY

🎉 Excited to share a new piece from the Russell Group today: "Helping under-represented students succeed in higher education"! We can all agree that educational inequality impacts both individuals and the country as a whole. Universities, in collaboration with schools, colleges, and other partners, play a crucial role in addressing these disparities. They work to remove barriers to success in higher education and conduct research to inform impactful policies that can make a real difference. Our latest briefing highlights the increasing number of students from under-represented areas at Russell Group universities. It showcases outstanding examples of outreach and support initiatives our members undertake to support these students. More can always be done to support students from under-represented backgrounds and that is why we look forward to working with the new government to help address educational inequality and improve life chances for young and adult learners across the UK. #HigherEducation #UniversityAccess #SocialMobility

Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) bridges the corporate and academic worlds, developing partnerships that align business objectives with the University’s strategic initiatives. As an Advancement professional, we help facilitate access to student scholarships, industry expert faculty and researchers, high-tech facilities, market-ready technologies, and opportunities for investment in transformational programs. This work takes a village and corporations and foundations are very much a part of that community. What an honor for Penn State Brandywine to host the Fall 2023 CFR Regional Roundtable supported by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). We had 55 Advancement professionals representing 36 institutions from PA, NJ, and DE with the goal of uniting the impact of philanthropic foundations with the wealth of university expertise and solutions through opportunities that bolster research, teaching and outreach mission. It is great to be amongst peers (and friends) and break silos by sharing our collective experiences, solutions, and ideas to enhance student outcomes and the value proposition of higher education. #highered #CFR #advancement #development #corporategiving #foundations #fundraising #CASE #education #access #WeAre #PennState

If you’re interested in understanding how we can support disadvantaged students through educational opportunities, it’s important to understand the achievement gap and the opportunity gap. This is a great article for that!
In the wake of the Supreme Court gutting affirmative action, as the political discourse heated up, I listened and reflected on what it meant for our students’ futures and what it meant for our organization, Minds Matter Bay Area (MMBay). The conversation seemed to conflate several key issues. In my article for Nonprofit Quarterly, I sought to deconstruct two different kinds of issues in education related to equity: the achievement gap and the opportunity gap. The achievement gap is the substantial learning gap that exists between wealthy and poor students, and (relatedly) between white versus black and brown students. The achievement gap starts at home, even before kids are of age to attend school. MMBay addresses an important problem - but that problem is not the achievement gap. It's related to the achievement gap, but its scope is tangible and within the reach of what a nonprofit can impact. The opportunity gap issue that we’re addressing is called undermatching. In short, gifted and hardworking students from low-income backgrounds severely underestimate their own potential and lack the support systems required to help them access colleges and careers that they are actually academically qualified for. Read the full piece to learn more about the scope of the issue and why it’s worthy of addressing: https://lnkd.in/gaEdMKfb

Having recently assisted some non-Iowa colleges with similar credit transfer and degree-sharing #partnerships, I cannot help but wonder if this St. Ambrose University and Mount Mercy University agreement might lead to others and--ultimately--a robust and sustainable statewide Catholic #highereducation consortium. One that offers current and prospective #college students a common application/acceptance to a much wider array of institutions, courses, majors, and cocurricular experiences. When one factors in the Iowa Department of Education Tuition Grant (up to $7500/year(!) for state residents attending an Iowa nonprofit IHE), #Iowa could provide a national model for addressing the #highered "demographic cliff" (including a 10-year decline in post-secondary participation of Iowa HS grads) with solutions that create strength through partnership instead of slow deaths (cf. Gary Stocker's work) via sustained unnecessary competition, duplication programs and expenditures, enrollment declines, and/or irreversible structural deficits. I hope and surmise that there are some governing boards and #leadership teams in Sioux City, Des Moines, Dubuque, and Epworth paying close attention (and reaching out) to their peers in Davenport and Cedar Rapids this week. Hats off to Amy Novak and Todd Olson for taking the first important steps for the good of their students and their communities.
