🌎🌟 Did you know that Spanish exploration started in the 1500s, but there were people in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama LONG before that time? Their rich, Native history and culture have left a lasting impact on Florida, including a unique blessing of graves that has kept hurricanes from hitting Tampa Bay for over 90 years! 🌀🙏 🌿🌾 Some of the original tribes in Florida included the Apalachee, Timucua, Tocobago, Calusa, Ais, and Mayaca. However, by 1700, most of the Native people were enslaved, pushed west to Oklahoma/Arkansas, or succumbed to diseases brought by the Spaniards. 🛡️✊ In the 1800s, the government sought to relocate all Native Americans, leading many tribes to band together and form the Creek Confederacy. They valiantly fought the US Military for years (1818-1858) to protect their right to their homeland. This struggle ultimately resulted in the US Military giving up and leaving the Seminole tribe as the only to never sign a formal treaty. 👏🌍 Today, Florida is home to over 53,000 registered Native Americans and represents over 39 different tribes. We owe them gratitude for their contributions, like the Hard Rock, and the hurricane protection. For Hurricane Awareness Month in June, we're highlighting RAPID-gathered data that help engineers build stronger, more resilient infrastructure. This research helps reduce the impact of increasingly frequent and destructive hurricanes. First up: Hurricane Michael in 2018, which caused many high-volume/low-rise (warehouse) buildings to collapse. Using RAPID-collected data, we identified a common failure point. Did you know that Earth and climate system models are so finely tuned that nowadays, scientists can accurately predict seasonal storms? According to Professor Mann's group, this year, the North Atlantic hurricane season could bring up to 39 tropical cyclones—a record-breaking number. Seasonal storm frequency and intensity are highly influenced by Anthropogenic #globalwarming. Another proof that #climatechange poses a big risk to human life and many other species.

I recently presented my research on "Retirees on the Move: Examining Mobility Responses and Recovery Dynamics During Hurricane Ian in Southwest Florida" at the American Association of Geographers conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am grateful for the immense support from my advisor Yujie Hu and my lab mates. My work explored the movement and recovery patterns of elderly people during Hurricane Ian. We found that mobility drastically declined on the day of landfall, and some census tracts took almost 92 days to recover. Random Forest models outperformed Ordinary Least Squares regression in predicting mobility patterns. Several social and geographical factors were statistically significant in predicting recovery patterns during Hurricane Ian. #aag2024 #hurricane #mobility #recovery #ian

Reflecting on Beryl: The precision of the initial 'Cone of Uncertainty' forecast by the National Hurricane Center for Beryl has impressed many, and rightfully so. When Beryl was located in the deep Southeast Caribbean, the projected path proved to be highly accurate. This achievement can be credited to the extensive data collected by Hurricane Hunters over the years. As our scientific techniques improve, there will be a greater emphasis on predicting rapid intensification events. Interestingly, Beryl was only expected to peak at Category 3, but it escalated to a Category 5 hurricane. #Beryl
