HUGE LOVE FOR FAMI HUB (Footwear & Manufacturing Innovation) 💚 For decades, #footwear and apparel has been designed in #Oregon and made in Southeast Asia. A local group wants to relocate some of that manufacturing to one of Portland’s struggling neighborhoods. Late last week, Oregon lawmakers set aside $2 million for the Made in Old Town development project. If approved by the governor, the money will go to the Old Town Community Association, part of a group that wants to bring manufacturing, housing, and office and retail space to the district on the northern edge of downtown. The group envisions repurposing eight existing, and mostly vacant, Old Town Chinatown buildings and filling them with resources for the footwear and apparel industry, one of the cornerstones of Oregon’s economy thanks to the corporate homes of Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Adidas North America and many others. The $2 million will go towards a 30,000-square-foot green manufacturing facility that would help entrepreneurs get new companies off the ground and existing companies develop new products and technologies. The facility, also known as the footwear and manufacturing innovation (FAMI) hub, would showcase technology that’s more environmentally friendly and less wasteful than traditional manufacturing techniques, such as water-free dyeing and on-demand 3D-printed manufacturing. We were approached by B&Q to help improve the installation of their bathroom and kitchen display units. Our brief was to make this process quicker, leaner and more cost effective. We quickly identified the current issues on site including install timings, the number of multi-trades required and the lengthy planning times. We then developed a unique off-site modular approach, using a steel frame structure which could then be overlaid with our bespoke wall system to suit individual pod needs. We designed, manufactured and installed a new off-site modular solution reducing site time by 3 weeks (10 operative days). Don’t buy the latest interior goods before reading this! I recently visited one of my friends’ houses and this is what I saw right at the entrance. 2-3 pairs of footwear immediately next to a modern trendy shoe rack. As a designer, the first question that popped in my mind was, “if there is a dedicated storage space for it, why is it not utilized properly?” This is a common mistake that many people make. People chase after the latest interior products, trending designs, and units for their looks and aesthetics. But the point they miss is the functionality part. Let's say a family has 4 people. Before buying a product as simple as a shoe rack, one needs to ask the right questions. - How many existing pairs of footwear? - How many might they end up buying? The product they are buying should serve the purpose for at least a few years. Only then can we call it value for money. If it's not serving the purpose, it's not just about not doing its function but a waste of resources, money, etc. The same goes true for wardrobes. An entire pile of clothes falls on one’s head while opening the shutter. It is clearly a case of not planning and organizing well. Your day starts by picking up your clothes in the morning and going through an energetic schedule. If those 10-15 minutes are a stressful scenario, it is going to create a big impact, which can easily be avoided in the first place. I firmly believe in the principle: A place for everything and everything in its place. Ask the right questions.
