🫒 Did you know❓ After making olive oil, there's a leftover mix of water, crushed olives, and seeds. This makes up about 80% of what's put into the press. This leftover, called pomace, is an organic material with acidic elements. It can lead to various ecological problems in groundwater, streams, and purification plants. How much do you think bacon or milk would cost if the companies that we buy these things from had to pay for the environmental damage to the water and air quality caused by the manure management systems or lagoons from their CAFOs? How much do you think corn or soy and the innumerable cheap processed foods we enjoy from them would cost if the companies that buy these commodities from farmers had to pay for the ecological restoration needed to end the algae blooms caused from the overuse of synthetic fertilizers used in their production? These products shouldn't be affordable because we're already paying too high a price for the current way they are being produced. This ratio signifies the balance between #Carbon and #Nitrogen in the soil, crucial for optimizing microbiological processes, organic matter decomposition, and nutrient release.✅ Soil always tries to maintain a C:N ratio, typically between 10:1 to 20:1. A C:N ratio like this is ideal for soil health. Achieving this healthy balance requires specific steps:👇 Regularly incorporate #OrganicMatter such as manure, compost, neem cake, castor cake, vermicompost etc. into the soil to ensure a sufficient carbon presence.🤎 Use Nitrogen-rich fertilizers such as urea judiciously and only as needed.🤏 Implement #Intercropping and #Mulching techniques to cover the field, fostering a conducive environment for maintaining the C:N ratio.🌽 Periodically introduce beneficial bacteria into the soil to support its microbial ecosystem.🦠 By following these steps, farmers can promote a healthy C:N ratio, facilitating optimal soil function and crop productivity.

Did you know that the majority of all #agricultural land is unsuitable for crop production? 🌾 Marginal lands aren’t able to grow food for people to consume, but they do produce grasses and roughage that #cattle are able to digest thanks to their #ruminant digestive system. 🐂 After being consumed by ruminants, #methane is released into the atmosphere through their burps in a process called enteric fermentation, where microbes break down what they've eaten in the rumen. After 12 years, methane is broken down into carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Plant matter pulls that #carbon from the air and stores it as carbohydrates in their roots, stems and leaves through photosynthesis and the process, known as the biogenic carbon cycle, repeats itself.

How are the nitrate levels in your area? 🌍 Regions like Canterbury and Gisborne are facing significant nitrate leaching challenges. Excitingly, researchers have found that irrigating with humic acids or fulvic acids reduces the leaching of nitrogen compounds into subsoil water. 🌱 Growers could cut back on synthetic fertiliser use and use humate-based alternatives within the plant rooting zone or even humic acid used in conjunction with bulk fert will make a significant difference💚 Applying dry or liquid humic substances enhances fertiliser efficiency, promoting increased uptake of minerals to plants for improved production. Humic substances play a vital role by binding plant nutrients, increasing the cation exchange capacity of the soil which prevents in particular nitrogen and phosphorous leaching into the subsoil or volatilisation into the atmosphere.
