#TURBO_EXPANDER REFRIGERATION BY POLYTROPIC EXPANSION ( TURBO EXPANDER): This process is based on the use of an expansion turbine (expander) through which the gas expands and cools. The work provided by the gas energy is recovered on the turbine shaft which is coupled to a compressor. Compared to the JOUL THAMSON valve, expanding in a turbine allows for a "faster" temperature drop (a small 1°/bar pressure drop: about double). This is because we benefit from the Joule-Thomson effect + the fact that the gas does work (turns the turbine), which causes it to lose energy (hence a second reason for the temperature drop!!!). At MPP4 in HASSI R'MEL, the HUDSON process is used, which is based on this technique of refrigeration. #OIL_GAS_ENGINEERING
