CO2 emissions - measured throughout the life cycle of products from the Zero line in 2023 using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, verified and certified with EPDs - have been offset through the acquisition of certified carbon credits in support of renewable energy and forestry protection projects. The portfolio demonstrates Mapei’s commitment to the #planet, to people and to biodiversity. Mapei’s portfolio of #construction products includes #sustainable and durable solutions for a vast range of applications: from protecting reinforcement rods and #repairing #surfaces and structures, to #anchoring applications using #thixotropic, hi-flow mortars with normal-set or rapid-set properties. Tasked with the mission to restore and protect these vital natural borders, the water authorities "Rijn en IJssel" embarked on an innovative solution. 🌱 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞: The Oude IJssel, a tranquil river draining rainwater from Germany to the Netherlands, experienced notable erosion along its banks, exacerbated by both recreational and commercial navigation. 🛠️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The decision to install EnkaMat A20 was a pivotal one. This choice was influenced by the water authorities' positive experiences in previous projects. EnkaMat A20, known for its three-dimensional matting pre-filled with chippings, was selected for its ability to encourage rapid vegetation growth while providing substantial erosion protection. 🌿 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬: The installation of EnkaMat A20 transformed the riverbanks into green, thriving ecosystems. The mat's structure, optimized for vegetation growth, not only stabilized the soil but also blended seamlessly into the natural surroundings. The result? A well-vegetated bank within two years, offering a permanent, maintenance-free solution that harmonizes with the environment. 🔄 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: The banks were re-profiled and equipped with a water-side puddle for additional vegetation support, including grass seeds and reed rhizomes. As we move into what may be peak conference and events season there will be much continued discussion and updates on the world of #soils. This includes management of soils, aggregates and similar materials from a development #compliance and #sustainability perspective but also the complex critical wider environmental systems perspective #carbon #BNG #catchments #nutrients #ecosystems etc. Keep an eye out for updates from key events and expos including Contamination & Land Remediation Expo (CLR Expo) as part of the wider Environmental Services & Solutions Expo (ESS Expo) and Ground Engineering Magazine's 2024 sustainability conference both back to back on consecutive weeks in September. We can no doubt expect further updates from other key organizations including Society for the Environment (SocEnv), MidLE: Midlands Land Events, British Society of Soil Science, CL:AIRE to name just a few, and hopefully once this week's #generalelection is out of the way Environment Agency and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will be able to return to key forums. Joanne Kwan has in particular asked me to promote CIRIA's event on the very near horizon next Wednesday (10th July in Manchester). Not one which I am able to attend unfortunately, but certainly worth others being aware of with some interesting sessions and perspectives expected. This of course all continues the work which we were proud to have brought together in producing CIRIA #C809: a guide which (with very few exceptions) continues to remain up to date almost a year since original publication and hopefully something which has found a useful home on many people's desks! For millions of years, moss has been the silent champion maintaining Earth's balance. Today, the Dutch-based company, Respyre, is tapping into the power of moss to create bioreceptive concrete. Bio-receptive concrete is 87% circular. The company claims their product can store CO2 as chalk, making it CO2-negative. This is an example of the uptake in nature-inspired materials – and it is a good sign. The green building materials market is expanding. IMC's Timber Talk Tuesday: The journey of a mass timber construction project begins in the forests. While it's true that all wood originates from the forest, the emphasis here lies in responsible wood sourcing from certified forests and mills. One of our valued partners on the Ellis Mass Timber project, Nordic Structures, is committed to engineering wood products for the construction industry and providing sustainable construction materials. The wood supplied by Nordic originates from public forests that hold Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) including territories certified by Nordic’s Certification Environnementale des Forêts (CEAF). The wood specifically supplied for the Ellis Preserve project is predominately Black Spruce that averages only 5-6” in diameter at maturity. This wood was sustainably harvested in the boreal forests of northern Quebec and optimized at Nordic Structures’ manufacturing facility Chantiers Chibougamau before being delivered and erected. Their commitment to sustainable construction goes beyond sourcing. Nordic Structures embraces sustainable practices throughout their fabrication lifecycle. They utilize excess tree branches from their logging sites to power local cogeneration plants, repurpose sawdust and fabrication residues at the sawmill as biomass fuel for kiln-drying operations, and send wood chip byproducts to local paper mills for use in manufacturing tissue paper and food packaging. 📣 Today is #WorldWaterDay. Around 71% of the earth’s surface is covered in water 💧 🌊   📌 As the impacts of #ClimateChange accelerate, so does the need to unite to protect our planet’s most vital resource. This year’s theme “Water for Peace" underlines this need, but also the power of coming together for the sustainable management of water as a means of avoiding conflict and a catalyst to jointly address common challenges. At Dorsch Gruppe, today, we’d like to shine light on how three colleagues and their project teams are contributing to sustainable water management. 📍 In Mali, AHT GROUP GmbH and the team around Paul Loibl supports smallholder irrigation, strengthening irrigated agriculture, for example by establishing new irrigation schemes and flood retention ponds. The project has helped to ensure that over 25,000 households will be able to earn a living from agriculture in the future.   📍 In Egypt, Sofia Alhmoud and her team at Dorsch International Consultants GmbH support the Integrated Water and Wastewater Services Programme 2, which will help to provide safe sanitation as well as to improve the quality of water supply - and thereby the living conditions of communities in Assiut and Minya. 📍 In Germany, Matthias Krug and his colleagues at spiekermann ingenieure gmbh support the sustainable upgrading of a historic dam with UNESCO World Heritage site status, leveraging a flowing raw water wave for energetic use, and contributing to making sustainable water supply in the Freiberg and Dresden region a reality for the next 50 years.  Photo: © UN-Water

As a potential solution, high-performance building materials, crafted from building rubble and plant waste have been developed as part of the ReMatBuilt project at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research in Braunschweig, Germany. This innovative approach, not only promises to make construction more sustainable but also offers a beacon of hope for expedited reconstruction efforts in conflict-ridden regions like Ukraine. Imagine, recycled concrete fortified with plant-based natural fibres like flax and bolstered by wood chips sourced from forestry waste. Add to the mix, ash from burnt rice husks, serving as a superior substitute for cement while mitigating carbon dioxide emissions. This amalgamation of nature's bounty and cutting-edge technology embodies the essence of sustainability. With the backing of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and a relentless commitment to innovation, the ReMatBuilt project is poised to reshape the future of construction materials. The team showcased their groundbreaking materials at the Hannover Messe Preview event in February.
