NEW YORK CITY OYSTERS and its TRAGIC HISTORY. This is an oyste3r and clm stand by the South Street Piers in NYC in 1898 (125 years ago) Long before pizza, hot pretzels, bagels, and dirty water hot dogs, oysters once reigned supreme as the quintessential New York City food. NYC had shellfish-encrusted shores. The history of the NYC oyster is a history of New York itself—its wealth, its strength, its excitement, its greed, its thoughtfulness, its destructiveness and its blindness. It was pollution and over-harvesting that killed the oyster industry in NYC, a surprising feat considering that the lower Hudson estuary once had 350 square miles of oyster beds and some biologists estimate that the New York Harbor contained half of the world’s oysters NYC settlers even called Ellis and Liberty islands “Little Oyster Island” and “Great Oyster Island” because of the sprawling oyster beds surrounding them. Pearl Street, once a waterfront road, was named for the mounds of oyster shells left there. The combination of having reputably the best oysters in the world in what had become unarguably the greatest port in the world made NYC the world’s oyster capital. Oyster taverns popped up all over the city to feed the seemingly insatiable appetite. Delmonico’s, easily the vanguard restaurant of NYC, set the trend of serving oysters raw on the half-shell. Due to human-made reasons, the oysters of New York Harbor were not on a sustainable track. Burdened by over-harvesting (over 1 billion a year), sewage pollution (dumping millions of gallons of raw, untreated sewage into the harbor on a daily basis), and landfill—Manhattan added over 60 acres to its land area with landfill. Bulkheads, piers and landfills were good for trade and commerce, but bad for marine biodiversity. By 1927, the last of the New York oyster beds were closed, primarily because of toxicity…and just like that, NYC had squandered one of its greatest natural resources by imposing upon their habitat. LESSON TO BE LEARNED: Don’t take what you have for granted. One day you may wake up and find that it is gone. #nyc #history #shankerlaw

Sonoma County, located in Northern California, is a beautiful region that offers its residents an abundance of natural beauty. Whether you're a wine connoisseur, an outdoor enthusiast, or simply looking for a change of pace, Sonoma County has a lot to offer. Here's what you need to know about moving to this county just north of San Francisco. Climate Sonoma County is known for its Mediterranean climate, which means that you can expect warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This type of climate is ideal for outdoor activities, and the mild weather makes it possible to enjoy the county's many parks and beaches year-round. Always have extra layers on hand. Even if it is swelteringly hot during the day, depending where you are, it can get really chilly at night or if you are near the coast and the evening fog rolls in. Cost of Living While the cost of living in Sonoma County is higher than the national average, the region's many amenities and scenic beauty make it worth the investment. The biggest expenses in Sonoma County are housing and transportation, so it's important to factor these costs into your budget when considering a move. The median home price in Sonoma County is currently $974,257. Wine Country Sonoma County is renowned for its wine industry and is home to over 400 wineries. Whether you're a wine lover or not, the rolling hills, lush vineyards, and charming tasting rooms make for a beautiful backdrop for daily life. My favorite winery is Paradise Ridge in Santa Rosa. It has amazing views and really cool art. Outdoor Recreation Sonoma County is amazing for outdoor enthusiasts. The region is the perfect place for hiking, camping. The Russian River is great for canoeing and kayaking. There are also several state parks and beaches that are perfect for picnics, walks, and other outdoor activities. My favorite parks are Crane Creek Regional Park and Doran Regional Park. Dining and Shopping Sonoma County has great food and shopping options. One of my favorite places to visit is the Barlow in Sebastopol. It has tons of shops and restaurants. Grab a bite at Fern Bar after shopping at Indigenous. #sonomacounty #movingtosonomacounty #sonomarealtor

Public gardens are working to engage new and diverse audiences — how can you do so meaningfully, while also integrating a collaborative focus into your strategic plan? Building authentic relationships that reflect the rich tapestry of our communities is vital. Canopy's Director of Planning, Anna Musun-Miller, joined leaders from Lewis Ginter Botanical, New York Botanical Garden, and #McKeeBotanicalGarden to discuss Authentic Collaborations for Strategic Outcomes at the #APGAConference. A couple key takeaways from the conversation: 🌱 Strategic Planning is a great process to either spark new connections or deepen existing ones. 🌱 It’s important to know WHY you are pursuing a partnership so that you can express expectations clearly and make sure everybody gets what they need out of the interaction. 🌱 Relationships are work and need both time and resources, whether they are between individuals or organizations. Thank you to Michaela Wright, Michelle Berthier-Israel, and Rochelle Ibanez-Wolberg for sharing so many great insights. #APGABoston24 #StrategicPlanning #PublicGardens #Gardens American Public Gardens Association
