A great coach can transform a sports organization, just like a great business owner can transform a company. Pete Carroll transformed The Seattle Seahawks.
14 years ago, my beloved Seahawks needed a change at head coach but no one expected bringing in a college coach from the hated USC Trojans. Not to mention some of the rumblings of NCAA violations...
Pete came in and said this is going to be a players first organization that empowers the players to be themselves in order to get the most out of them on the field. He bucked the trend of conventional player/coach relationships, and it worked.
As a business owner, you have to decide what your management strategy is going to be. Are you going to choose a conventional way of management or create your own blended management style? From there, how are you going to evolve that style as industries and people change?
I think staying true to your authentic self as a manager is the best way to build rapport and trust with a team, and even clients. Trying to force a different communication style because you've "read" it's the right way to do it can easily come off as disingenuous.
If I ever have a run at a company, like the run Pete Carroll had in Seattle, you can sign me up for that right now.
Thanks, Pete.
