It was a true delight to welcome back to campus the fun-loving Monica Bertino Wooden ’81 and her entourage of family and friends as we all celebrated Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium. Even beyond Monica’s amazingly generous and transformative gift, our fans had much to cheer about last week: first, the opening of the field, which is now named in her honor, and then a decisive victory there on Saturday. Ithaca College Football is undefeated at home! We thank Monica, and may her collaborative and competitive spirit inspire us to new heights! https://lnkd.in/eifuzRSx

As an Executive Board member of Kids' Chance of Florida, it is with a grateful and humble heart to partner with industry leaders like One Call, providing an employee-funded scholarship to Florida student Montse Gallegos.
In August 2022, Montse’s father, a warehouse manager passed away due to injuries following a workplace accident. Later that year, Montse’s mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. On the heels of an extremely tragic year, the Kids’ Chance of Florida/One Call scholarship is enabling her to attend college without the added stress of tuition payments.
“Workplace injuries affect the whole family,” said One Call CEO Jay Krueger. “While trying to overcome grief, families are also forced to deal with mounting financial pressures. We are sensitive to these burdensome situations, which is why we want to be a part of the solution. This scholarship provides the children of critically or fatally injured workers with a path forward. We are proud to play a small role in helping them attain a much brighter future.”
Kids’ Chance of Florida is a state chapter of Kids’ Chance of America, a charitable organization that is dedicated to making a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by workplace injuries by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals. Children of these workers can no longer count on the income of the injured or deceased parent. Accompanying the grief of loss, or the need to deal with an injured parent, is the increased likelihood that they cannot afford a college education. Since its founding in 1988, Kids' Chance of America has awarded more than 10,000 scholarships totaling more than $36 million.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY
I’ve loved sports since I was a kid, both as a fairly mediocre participant and as a fan.
My passion for sports, however, is being sorely tested and may soon flame out.
In short, I am disgusted by most of what I see happening around sports at every level, from the pros on down to high schools.
Today’s example #1: Chucky Hepburn, a good but not great basketball player for the UW Badgers.
Despite his acknowledged high value to his teammates and coach Greg Gard, as well as his failure to achieve the goals of winning the Big 10 championship and a deep run in the NCAA tourney, Hepburn has decided that “loyalty” means nothing and playing for UW apparently won’t get him drafted high enough by the NBA, so he’s headed to Greener Pastureland, i.e., the Transfer Portal.
Like so many of today’s collegiate athletes, it’s all about ”me, me, and me” and, of course, the cash payout from NIL coupled with his draft potential into the pros.
Well, I say good riddance to Chucky. His selfish attitude is emblematic of far too many of his college-level contemporaries across the country.
And then, speaking of NIL (name, image, and likeness) we have example #2: the WIAA is considering allowing high school athletes to benefit from NIL.
That’s right, your neighbor Scooter from the local high school basketball team may soon be able to offer his own signature shoe. Of course, if NIL is adopted, instead of taking the bus to school, Scooter will be driving in his new Corvette.
Is it just a fond memory of mine, or do you also remember days when people played a sport because they loved it, not because of what their participation could add to their bank account?

The participation of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. members in Usher's Super Bowl halftime show performance holds significant cultural and symbolic importance. Kappa Alpha Psi is a historically Black fraternity founded in 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington, with a mission centered around achievement in every field of human endeavor. Its inclusion in such a high-profile event as the Super Bowl halftime show serves multiple purposes:
1. Visibility and Representation: The presence of Kappa Alpha Psi members alongside Usher, a global superstar, at an event watched by millions worldwide provides a platform for showcasing the fraternity's traditions, culture, and the broader historical and cultural significance of Black Greek letter organizations (BGLOs) in America. It highlights the fraternity's legacy and contributions to community service, leadership, and academic excellence.
2. Cultural Celebration: The Super Bowl halftime show is a cultural touchstone in the United States, blending sports, music, and entertainment. The performance celebrates African American culture and heritage by incorporating elements of Kappa Alpha Psi, such as their steps, chants, or symbolism, showcasing the rich traditions of Black fraternities and sororities to a broader audience.
3. Solidarity and Support: Usher's decision to include members of Kappa Alpha Psi in his performance can also be seen as an expression of solidarity and support for the African American community and its institutions. It recognizes the importance of Black fraternities and sororities in fostering community, leadership, and academic achievement among their members.
4. Empowerment and Inspiration: For young African Americans, seeing members of Kappa Alpha Psi performing in such a significant and mainstream event can be empowering and inspiring. It demonstrates the impact and relevance of BGLOs in contemporary society and encourages young people to aspire to achievement and service.
5. Networking and Collaboration: Usher's and Kappa Alpha Psi's collaboration for the Super Bowl halftime show highlights the potential for partnerships between artists and community organizations. Such collaborations can open doors for further engagements, projects, and initiatives that benefit broader communities and causes.
In summary, the inclusion of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. members in the Super Bowl halftime show with Usher serves as a powerful statement of cultural pride, representation, and the enduring significance of historically Black fraternities and sororities in the fabric of American society. #LifememberofKappaAlphaPsiFraternityInc#Achievementineveryfieldofhumanendeavor

Go to High School Go to College
The "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young African-American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.
