The safety of tall buildings in the world's cities, in the face of extreme external traumas like vehicle impacts, blasts or fires, has been tested using a model developed by structural engineers at the University of Surrey. The team applied the model to real high-rise building designs, exploring what would happen if corner and side columns were suddenly removed. Dr Sagaseta who led the project said: "Reassuringly, our research showed the robustness of typical well-designed modern buildings in non-seismic areas. We demonstrated that good design and engineering can prevent a progressive collapse -- where one slab falls, causing others below to fall in a chain reaction." https://hubs.ly/Q02d3Qs30

NEWS: Case Western Reserve University Breaks Ground on Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building -- Case Western Reserve University will break ground in May of 2024 on the $300 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building in Cleveland. Designed by HGA and Van Auken Akins Architects, the 189,000-sf facility will house the School of Engineering and provide additional capacity for the College of Arts and Sciences. Flexible research labs will be complemented by dedicated technical suites for the discovery of new medical treatments, energy solutions, and sustainable manufacturing modalities. The five-story structure will also accommodate offices, gathering spaces, and café. The development is part of a strategic revitalization of Case Quad and will feature a landscaped outdoor courtyard that links to an ADA-accessible pathway. A sophisticated glazed façade will put science on display while supplying abundant natural light throughout the facility, which is targeting LEED Platinum certification. Representing a contract value of $200 million, the project is being delivered by Discovery Builders, a joint venture of Turner Construction Company, Adrian Maldonado & Associates, Next Generation Construction, and The AKA Team. Asserting that the most viable means to radically reduce embodied carbon in new buildings is to use plant and earth-based materials, the lecture and book demonstrates how this approach can catalyze new types of houses that reduce or sequester carbon, engage regenerative life cycles, and create healthier spaces for living. Interlaced into the talk are reuse and biogenic projects designed by LTL Architects. In particular, the lecture will explicate five small LTL designed houses that use biogenic material assemblies as a catalyst for building form, domestic organization, and spatial seduction. These projects demonstrate our optimism about architecture’s agency when embracing biogenic materials in the move towards a regenerative future.

In summer 2022, three temporary wooden buildings - the Huber Pavilions - had to make way for a new building on the ETH Hönggerberg campus. The CircÛbi teaching project took advantage of this opportunity: under the co-leadership of two ETH professors, civil engineer Catherine De Wolf and architect Momoyo Kaijima, students collected the construction elements (or components) of the dismantled teaching buildings in order to reuse the materials according to the principle of the circular economy. #CircularEconomy #reuse #sustainablearchitecture

J.T. Bachman, Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture, discusses his project “Waste Not, What Not.” This project seeks to reduce the amount of materials that go into landfills by transforming them into new designs and building materials. Bachman shares that according to EPA statistics, over 200 million tons of trash end up in U.S. landfills each year. By transforming waste and recycled materials into prototypes and long-lasting functional objects, Bachman hopes that he and his students can show through exploration, thoughtful design, and knowledge sharing that designers and architects can keep more materials out of landfills. https://lnkd.in/dzSWb3rv

It’s the final week to submit your abstract or workshop proposal to the 7th International Symposium on Formal Methods in Architecture.   This year’s symposium is a joint collaboration between the Architecture and Design Research Laboratory at Porto Higher Arts School and the Portuguese Order of Architects – North Regional Section. We hope you’ll join us in Porto, between the 3rd and 6th of December, to discuss the connection between formal methods and architectural practice and how to bridge the gap between scientific endeavours and practical applications in everyday architectural work. Recognizing that architecture and urbanism requires both technological and artistic approaches, the 7th Symposium will address current challenges in these fields, including production, sustainability, design, representation, communication, and heritage. The potential and limitations of using formal methods to address these challenges will also be explored. Researchers, professionals, and students in the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscape design, civil engineering, and computer science are invited to attend. We invite the submission of research proposals that enhance and advance these and related themes using novel or established methodologies, case studies, theoretical and historical perspectives, analytical experiments, and other methods.
