As a seasoned summer camp director, I've been privileged to witness the profound impact that experiential learning in nature has on children. This unique aspect of summer camps, I believe, is a key educational tool that complements traditional classroom learning. At camp, children interact with the natural world in a way that textbooks simply can't replicate. They learn about ecology, biology, and environmental science through direct, hands-on experiences. This immersive approach fosters a deeper understanding and a more meaningful connection with the subject matter. One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience is watching children's natural curiosity and sense of wonder come alive. They become explorers and scientists in their own right, asking questions, making observations, and engaging with their environment in thoughtful ways. This active, self-guided exploration is essential for developing critical thinking skills and a lifelong love of learning. Furthermore, summer camps instill a sense of environmental stewardship in children. As they learn about the ecosystems around them, they also understand the importance of preserving and protecting our natural world. This is a crucial lesson for future generations. From my perspective, the learning opportunities provided at summer camps are an invaluable part of a child's educational journey. They offer practical, real-world experiences that are both educational and engaging. But I'm curious to hear from others: How do you see these experiences complementing more traditional forms of education? I'd love to hear your insights and experiences!

Fair request or not? Teachers work hard for 10 months a year. Should they be asked to join teacher trainings during their summer breaks? What is your opinion? As presenter of these trainings, I see a split. Some schools are like, "No, we can't do a summer training. Teachers are all vacationing." Other schools feel they ONLY want to do a summer training. After all, once school starts, how will the teachers be able to leave class for PD?" Would you call a teacher an absolute fool if she gives up some of her precious vacation time for school-related duties? Or should this be a given—part and parcel of the job? As a society, are we sucking our teachers too much?

I give the welcome at Otterbein’s summer orientation program, as I’ve done at other schools for decades now. While the most memorable part seems to be my one-and-only magic trick (saved for orientation only and passed down by a mentor who did the same), I do hope the new students and parents remember something of what I say as well. Included in my presentation is the admonition to parents that we now share a goal; everyone at the University wants what you want . . . your son or daughter to be happy, healthy and self-sufficient. I make the point that to achieve this requires a new parental role: ensuring their students learn self-sufficiency. We give parents lots of information about our support services, from tutoring to RAs. This is not so the parents can utilize the services, but so they can point them out to their children when they have a need. In other words, push your kids to the help they need; don’t intervene directly unless you have to. Nearly all parents do just that--let their young adult children try to solve their own problems first. I wonder what truly motivates the other 1 percent who don’t follow my advice. Perhaps they think their child is unable to navigate on their own. I’d assure them if they believe that to be true, then it will be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Blog #11: BOARDING SCHOOLS 🏫 Boarding schools have long been a subject of curiosity, sparking debates on their merits and drawbacks. For many students, the idea of living away from home, surrounded by peers from diverse backgrounds, evokes a sense of adventure and growth. 🏫 One of the most enticing aspects of boarding schools is the opportunity for independence. Away from familiar environments, students learn to be self-reliant, cultivating essential life skills such as time management and responsibility. 🏫 Moreover, the immersive academic environment offered by boarding schools often leads to enhanced focus and dedication to studies. The close-knit community fosters a sense of camaraderie, encouraging intellectual curiosity and healthy competition. 🏫 However, boarding schools may not be suitable for everyone. It's essential to consider individual preferences and needs before making a decision. For some, the warmth of family and familiarity outweighs the allure of boarding life. 🏫 In conclusion, boarding schools can be transformative, offering a unique experience that shapes young minds. Whether it's a path to independence or a preference for home comfort, choosing the right educational journey is an adventure worth embracing. Diversity and Inclusion Trainer - Black representation in Finance, Medicine and Beauty - African history - Empowerment
I learned one of the most important life lessons to date, working with 1st to 4th graders in the past, who mostly came from different ethnic backgrounds and were deemed as children who'd end up in the 'Mittelschule' (schools for kids deemed as "not so smart" or having difficulties learning). This lesson is quite simple but definitely life changing: Be surrounded by people who have high expectations for you, and won't let their frustrations out on you. This doesn't only go for children/pupils but for humans in general no matter which phase in life they find themselves in. But the younger, the easier it is to change the foundation that will define how they do everything else in life. These children, for various reasons, kept being told that they weren't good enough and wouldn't amount to much. They often notice how you regard them or if you even expect anything from them. For example, the kids that were told that they aren't good in maths, didn't need me to help them much, but they needed someone like me who encouraged them, who asked them what they wanted and let them know they could do it if they put in the work. And a few months, these children surpassed the expectations of the people who had (sometimes subconsciously) put them down. This is something that many are lacking and especially children with migrant backgrounds, that will grow up, potentially never reaching their full potential because: it wasn't expected. And they know. So what are your expectations for the people around you?

Where are my HS and college ready people? Willow is a tool to help navigate the complex world of college AND professional programs (think apprenticeships, industry-recognized certificates, bootcamps, etc). Tagging some top of mind people who are doing great work in HS, college and career readiness and/or who I think should see this!
I’m so excited to share what I’ve been working on for the past year! At Rocky Mountain Prep I’ve been proud of the work that not only we, but many organizations around the country have done to prepare more students for college and life. I believe every student should graduate knowing that if they work hard, they can be successful in college. We know that >70% of jobs need postsecondary education. However, in Denver, most students who graduate DPS and go to college go to institutions with an on-time graduation rate for first-generation college students of a dismal 14%. For too many students from historically marginalized communities, college has become a high-stake gamble (to borrow Alex Cortez's language because of low completion, mixed ROI, and exploding costs). And that’s only for the roughly half of students who choose to go to college. Navigating professional programs is even more challenging. https://lnkd.in/dUkKAWRb So what are students, families, and educators to do? That’s where Willow comes in. We’ve built a recommendation engine for students (and those who love them) to navigate college AND professional programs (think apprenticeships, industry-recognized certificates, bootcamps, etc). We’re proud to offer a comprehensive tool that serves all students with meaningful and concrete quality next steps. We piloted and learned with the best: DSST Public Schools, Analise Gonzalez-Fine, and her exceptional team. This year, we’ve grown to serve all of their juniors and seniors in all 8 of their high schools and are starting to partner with other innovative districts and charter networks. Our vision is to transform the postsecondary education landscape by fueling the success of high-performing programs that serve all students well, and putting programs that have historically failed students out of business. I need your help! Please DM or schedule time (link in comments) with me to share your feedback about the product and potential partners. We’re working to build an app that is simple, effective, and delightful. More people than I could mention have gone above and beyond to help share their wisdom and work to help make this dream a reality. Thank you & onward!
