On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we mourn the transgender individuals whose lives have been lost due to violent acts of hate and prejudice. It was Initially started in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith after the murders of three Black Boston-based transgender women: Rita Hester, Chanelle Pickett, and Monique Thomas. Annually, it is now observed every November 20th in remembrance. Recognizing that this is a day filled with grief and mourning, we hope you can find time to practice self-care for yourself, your friends, and your community members if you need support. Intersectionality is a key concept in any type of inclusion work. We must acknowldge that many folks have lived experiences and are impacted by multiple types of identities and types of inequity. This is a case where the total impact is NOT always the sum of its parts. Being transgender and autistic, or having a disability and being of an immigrant community. These intersections play a large role in the overall impact on the body and spirit of these folks. It is a nuanced concept, and it adds to the complexity of equity work, but our efforts to meet people where they are will be worth the dividends of having a space and team where all folks are seen and acknowledged for their full selves.

Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the lives lost to anti-transgender violence. Each name represents a story, a dream, and a future cut short. Let's take a moment to remember and reflect on the urgency to stand against discrimination. February is LGBTQIA+ History Month, which is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, along with related civil rights movements. But, why is the internet important for young people in the LGBTQIA+ community and what can carers do to help them stay safe? 🏳️🌈 A space to explore identity: the internet is a place where everyone can explore content that they identify with or find inspiring 🏳️🌈 A space to feel part of something: people can access LGBTQIA+ forums or groups and conversations 🏳️🌈 A space for help, guidance and education: guidance and help with wellbeing, practical support, and trans-specific care, are more readily available because of the internet 🏳️🌈 A space for change: campaigning can be an empowering and meaningful part of LGBTQIA+ young people’s online lives, which also helps them feel included and listened to Carers are a big part of this journey. They can help by being supportive, positive, discuss expectations and by being open and honest 🙌

Too often we don't understand the layers within ourselves. We have fears that we're told to deny. We have intuitions that we're trained not to connect to. We have concerns that we're judged and dismissed for expressing. We don't understand the impact of this until we understand our story from newer and fresher eyes. Telling your story gives you the strength that you need over your own story.

Tomorrow is Transgender Day off Visibility and we need more! More representation in the mainstream media, more visibility on social media and more visibility in general so we can normalise transgender people in this world. Share more, be an ally more, be seen.
