This week's 'Impact Startups to Watch' are working on innovative #fuel solutions and technologies. While significant efforts have been made to enable a green transition, the global economy is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. A number of emerging impact startups are working on solutions to minimise the environmental impact of fuels by developing more sustainable and greener alternatives. ETFuels enables the decarbonisation of heavy industry at scale by making commercially attractive green fuels available to customers by pioneering an off-grid green fuel production model. The RedoxNRG system uses renewable energy to electrochemically capture CO2 from the atmosphere. The captured CO2 is concentrated and released to electrochemical reactor, where it is converted into green fuel. Spark e-Fuels is a climate tech startup on a mission to bring CO2-neutral e-fuels into the aviation industry. It designs, develops and operates highly efficient, scalable and automated e-fuel production facilities to help achieve CO2-neutral aviation. Dynelectro designs and manufactures Dynamic Electrolyser Units (DEUs) which produce green hydrogen for carbon-neutral eFuels. Atmonia is at the forefront of electrochemistry for the sustainable reduction of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. Their patented catalyst is currently being scaled up for industrial production of ammonia appropriate for use both directly in agriculture and as a new fuel source in global shipping. #impactentrepreneurship #fuels #energy

This question resonates with many who yearn for a sustainable future. While there's no silver bullet for #ClimateChangeMitigation, the growing investments in #GreenHydrogen are turning heads. 🔬 The Science and the Market #Hydrogen, the universe's most abundant element, is believed (and consensually accepted) as a cornerstone in achieving #NetZero by 2050. Europe's green hydrogen market is scaling up, fueled by regulatory initiatives, subsidies, and infrastructure development. Sectors like #Refineries, #Ammonia, and #Methanol are showing keen interest, especially as new regulations loom on the horizon. 💰 The Economics A recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study reveals that green hydrogen production costs in central Europe currently hover around €5–8/kg — more than twice to that of initial estimates! This makes it less competitive with other #Decarbonization technologies. A 2023 study by Azadnia et al. echoes these findings, identifying high capital investment as the top risk factor, followed by electrolyzer capacity and policy development. 🚧 The Challenges -> Offtakers' Reluctance: A lack of long-term commitments hampers market growth. -> Regulatory Hurdles: More aggressive implementation of #EU regulations is essential for #incentivizing the #hydrogenvaluechain. 🔀 At the Crossroads? Green Hydrogen offers versatility and zero emissions but grapples with cost and #infrastructure issues as these recent studies reveal. On the other hand, #Carboncapture delivers immediate impact and is crucial for #hardtoabate sectors, albeit at a high cost and energy consumption. Both technologies are pivotal in our journey toward sustainability. The challenge lies in leveraging their strengths while mitigating their weaknesses. At present, Europe is not making sufficient use of its hydrogen potential To reach climate neutrality, #Europe’s industry will need large quantities of carbon-neutral #hydrogen in the future. Many European countries, including #Germany, are planning large investments to develop and ramp up the hydrogen #industry needed for this. Within the HyPat research project, a new study by the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) Potsdam around Rainer Quitzow, Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, and the German Energy Agency (dena) makes five recommendations to the EU and the Member States and reveals a significant mismatch between the ratio of current investments and the potentials of individual European regions for low-cost hydrogen production. Furthermore, despite all the efforts made to produce hydrogen domestically, Germany will be an importer of hydrogen in the future. Windy and sunny countries with high potential to produce low-cost #renewable energy could largely meet Europe’s demand for hydrogen in the future and supply hydrogen to those European regions that do not have sufficient economic potentials compared to the demand expected in the future, such as Germany or the Netherlands, However, the investments made in those countries are currently low compared to Germany. Stronger cooperation at EU level could help to steer investments in the right direction. The study compares two scenarios for different ranges of hydrogen use in Europe with the regional potentials for producing green hydrogen as cheaply as possible.
