Over the last few months, our team members came together for some rewarding initiatives including a Habitat for Humanity International build in Minneapolis, sorting donations at Euston Foodbank in London, learning the art of the perfect pasta dish at a group cooking class in Dublin and unwinding with a paint-and-sip session in New York. These moments of connecting with one another are important in shaping the kind of collaborative culture we strive to create. They help remind us that it’s not just about the work we do, it’s about the people we do it with!

The Solidarity Collaborative’s work will draw from and build upon existing efforts of leaders and organizations at the forefront of solidarity work, offering inspiring examples of what is possible with greater intentionality around and investment in robust solidarity efforts. These examples include a series of cross-community Solidarity Summits, dedicated to fostering and supporting solidarity among social justice communities, where leaders such as Judith Browne Dianis were able to come together and share in their experiences. In our recent case study, Dianis, Executive Director of the Advancement Project, shares about how Solidarity Summits offered the unique opportunity to learn about movement building and resource sharing alongside fellow social justice philanthropic leaders. Trust based philanthropy requires a lot of rigor. Let's not underegg this and say 'quite'. Trust based philanthropy when truly trust based, transparent, participative is transformational. That requires a lot of self examination by the funder themselves and a willingness to make shifts and be accountable to themselves and others in myriad ways. #philanthropy #trust #transparency
Skeptics: "Trust-based philanthropy sounds like willy-nilly philanthropy. Where’s the rigor?" Truth: A trust-based approach requires quite a bit of rigor. A main componenet of rigor is to establish a clear concept of mission, strategy, and profile of community partners to which the foundation is accountable. The next level of rigor is in establishing and being transparent about the criteria and process by which grantee partners are identified and chosen. Great to see you Jennifer Wei and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation supporting The Chronicle of Philanthropy to put on this series of webinars about building a thriving nonprofit culture! I am registered and hoping to participate as much as possible -- encouraging others to sign-up as well! This is a critically important conversation at this time b/c research from Center for Effective Philanthropy shows that burnout is only increasing in the nonprofit sector. And decades of research from Christina Maslach at University of California, Berkeley show that burnout is an organizational culture issue more than an issue of individual behavior. Here at Fund the People, we believe #nonprofits needs #funders to engage in #TalentInvesting -- to provide proactive AND responsive #FundingThatWorks for the people who do the work. This means responding to specific grantee needs by deploying primary grant dollars to pay for things like: >> H.R. and people-focused staff positions; >> progressive personnel policies, >> decent wages and benefits; >> enough staff positions to share the workload and execute ambitious programs; >> conflict resolution and management practices; and >> intentional organizational culture planning and development. When funders step up In this way, nonprofits will have the financial resources and political incentives they need to build their team, and the #PeopleSystems they need to support the team. (You can learn more about our ideas through our Funding that Works Academy, featuring our self-paced online course, The Fundamentals of Talent-Investing for Foundation Professionals.
