🪙The Art Basel Lifestyle 2024 : A Personal Insight A week after the great opening of the messia Art Basel, waiting for a Friend at Café de Flore in Paris this early morning, thinking of a daily life deeply entrenched in the world stakes of art and luxury, I couldn't help but reflect on the latest buzz around Art Basel's bold venture into retail This wasn't just another commercial gimmick; it was a carefully curated experience designed by the brilliant Sarah Andelman renowned for her work with Colette boutique.The newly launched Art Basel Shop offers an eclectic mix of exclusive collectibles, from Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Ferris Wheel toy to Cindy Sherman’s skate decks, blending high art with high fashion in a way that’s both innovative and chic My personal journey through the artworld has taught me that true luxury isn’t just about owning a piece of art, it’s about experiencing and embodying the essence of that art in everyday life. This is precisely to me what the Art Basel Shop achieves. By bringing together artist collaborations and unique memorabilia, it might be allows us to take a piece of the fair’s magic home, extending the Art Basel experience beyond the confines of the exhibition halls Here’s a question: Is this move a masterstroke in making art more "accessible", or does it risk diluting the sanctity of high art by commercializing it? When we look at activations like the one mentioned in Stephanie Hirschmiller's article, we reinforce the discussion of Art being appropriated as a medium for innovation - over and over again. In one hand it is always positive to see Art expanding the conversation of new tech, in the other hand sometimes it makes serious debates to be softened, because we often associate Arts & Culture with positive dynamics. Fashion is expanding its presence within the "lifestyle" realm (debate started by theorists on 1980s), in which luxury is not only about the products, but about the culture and the overall behaviour of a community. Thus, I was very please to see this activation by LVMH Guerlain, validating what generations of new media artists have being since late 1980s. And it reminds me other key projects. Such as the early 2010s project, created by Milton Sogabe and his team - SciArts - called METACAMPO (Stephanie Hirschmiller you should definitely check, it is sublime). In partnership with Art Basel Since its inception in 1970, international Modern and contemporary art fair Art Basel has evolved in its bid to unite and connect different facets of the global art community. Founded by three Swiss gallerists — Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt — the fair today is a global leader with four international shows in Switzerland’s Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and, since 2022, Paris. For luxury fashion, courting the contemporary art customer could provide access to a cohort whose spending appears to be less impacted by rising living costs. According to the 2023 Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting, the median expenditure on fine art and antiques by collectors surveyed across 11 markets worldwide reached $65,000 in the first half of this year, up by 19 percent on 2021. Ahead of the Miami Beach show, which will play host to 277 exhibitors showing over a five-day event, BoF sits down with Art Basel’s global head of partnerships, Melissa Netecke, to discuss the evolution of the art fair, insight into ultra-high-net-worth consumers and how best to utilise the fair as a cultural conduit between art and luxury fashion. The Defining Art Events of 2023. If the art world in 2023 could be defined by one word, it would probably be scandal. From the multiple crises that embroiled the British Museum to investigations on human remains implicating the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History, to say nothing of the near constant seizures and repatriations across the institutional sphere, this was the year museums took a beating. Architect David Adjaye, advisor Lisa Schiff, and Yayoi Kusama all found themselves in hot water, while the fallout over the October 7 attack in Israel by the militant group Hamas and the resulting war on Gaza continues to upend the art world. 2023 was also the year that the pandemic boom times, marked by big debuts, rampant speculation, and a flood of new galleries, finally ended. The all-important auctions in May and November were middling at best, and while the art world’s fair calendar was in full swing, the usual optimism was not. The euphemism “market correction” could be heard across the trade as uncertainty was the name of the game. The sentiment from most major figures in the art world on 2023 seems fairly uniform: they’re just glad it’s over.
