I am closely observing the transformative potential of dual-use technologies within Central and Eastern Europe. These technologies, which straddle both civilian and military applications, are not only pivotal for security but also stand to propel substantial economic and technological advancement across the region. The burgeoning interest in dual-use technologies is evident from the civilian startup ecosystem’s engagement with NATO’s initiatives. Notably, the launch of pilot challenges by NATO DIANA in areas such as energy resilience, secure information sharing, and sensing and surveillance attracted over 1,300 applications from across the NATO alliance. This overwhelming response highlights the vast potential and keen interest within the tech community to engage in dual-use technology development. Really interesting conversation between DIANA’s Managing Director, Deeph Chana, and TVP World’s Sascha Fahrbach at last week’s Tallinn Digital Summit – including on the variety of applications to our initial challenges: As Deeph said, “what’s been great to see is the breadth and distribution of the response. It’s right across the countries of NATO… We’re also looking for technologies that can be useful in the civilian space as well as having applications in the more traditional defence space… And, when you think about defence and security more holistically, the interconnections between the two domains are actually very profound. Read & Share recommendation: Proud to have contributed to this important piece entitled 'Central and Eastern Europe: NATO’s New Centre of Gravity,' recently published by Poland's Institute of Central Europe (Instytut Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej Fundacja Trójmorza). The report, co-created with Dominik Jankowski, Gen. Tomasz Kowalik, Tomasz Stępniewski, and Joanna KAMIŃSKA, highlights how Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has become increasingly relevant for NATO's security and prosperity. Among the recommendations I offered, there is one on the urgent need to leverage a spirit of innovation. Therefore, to support new models of innovation and the application of #dualuse, #deeptech, Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDT) for security, defense, and resilience solutions, as well as to build technological cooperation throughout CEE. DefSecIntel at the NATO-Ukraine Defence Innovators Forum Today ended the NATO-Ukraine Defence Innovators Forum in Kraków, where DefSecIntel Solutions, along with stakeholders from across the Euro-Atlantic innovation ecosystems, participated. Innovation is a cornerstone for defence and gaining advantage on the battlefield. Defsecintel systems are innovation-driven. As we build more cloud capabilities for NATO operations, we need more soldiers that are proficient in software development to develop and adapt new capabilities. As this becomes more common, the alliance has the potential to unleash the tech ecosystems of all member states to enhance the alliance. This will require the right leaders implementing the right policies, and from what I am seeing, NATO is on the right path.
