#StormwaterManagement #MilwaukeeMetropolitanSewerageDistrict #CWPurpero "Construction is underway on an effort to make a concrete and asphalt colossus a little bit more “green.” The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, with general contractor C.W. Purpero, Inc., is adding green infrastructure components underneath Interstate 43/94 at the W. Becher Street overpass. The project will capture stormwater runoff through natural vegetation, dry stream beds, a bio-infiltration basin and a “stormwater forest.” The water, contaminated with oil and other metals from the roadway, would otherwise end up in the nearby Kinnickinnic River or Deep Tunnel combined sewer system. A total of 18 drains from the freeway are to be connected to the site below. The infrastructure improvements are being installed on what has long been an effectively-vacant, four-acre lot north of W. Becher Street between S. 4th and 5th streets. The freeway becomes an elevated structure at that point, creating a cavernous, largely-covered space underneath as it approaches Downtown. Project renderings depict new walking paths being added to the site. The street serves as a link between the Bay View, Lincoln Village and Harbor District neighborhoods. But multi-layered ramps paralleling the freeway create a disconnect between the east and west sides."

Did you know that there is a tool that shows how much excess water enters the sewer system of New York City? It’s called the I/I map, and it stands for inflow and infiltration. These are the sources of stormwater and groundwater that can reduce the capacity of the sewer system and cause overflows or backups. The I/I map is part of the Open Sewer Atlas NYC project, which aims to create transparency into the confusing world of NYC’s sewer system. The project uses publicly available maps and data to display a more complete picture of how NYC’s sewer system works. A new study by HIP Investor Inc., and Corvias Infrastructure Solutions, LLC (CIS) examines the effectiveness of “Green Job Creation” within our nation’s largest green stormwater infrastructure programs. The programs studied here-in include those led by Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District in #Wisconsin, Prince George's County, Maryland, Buffalo Sewer Authority in #NewYork, and Philadelphia Water Department in #Pennsylvania. Everybody knows the advice, “Call before you dig!” Having accurate knowledge of underground utility lines prevents damage to those lines and keeps construction workers safe during digging projects, but Minnesota’s utility damage prevention laws haven’t kept up with the times. This term the legislature is considering new bills to require more accurate knowledge about underground facilities and implement new technologies that will save costly damage and potentially save lives. As we continue to invest in infrastructure over the next decade, it is essential to keep these laws up to date, and this is a great first step.
