"The miseducation of Black students and the disinvestment in Black education in America is an ongoing historical battle. In the country’s current political and social climate, bans on books and school courses, and censorship on education and antiracism are prevalent. It is important to note that these censorships intend to silence Critical Race Theory, intersectionality, gender expression, Black feminism, Queer theory, and other schools of thought." Last month, I facilitated a mini Black Feminism(s) workshop for the year 10's at Bishop Challoner Secondary School as part of my ReachOut mentor share. We discussed how Black feminism(s) is an important way of reimagining the world and put some of the key themes of Black feminist theory to practice such as intersectionality, social justice and activism. In three groups the year 10's decided they wanted to address food insecurity, poverty, gender inequality and racism. After applying key elements of Black feminism(s) to find solutions to the issues they had raised, the students shared how they would approach 'making the world a better place'. They highlighted redistribution of wealth, anti-racism education, creating policies and mandatory training in the workplace to address gender inequality, classism and racism. It was a joy to give the students tools to reimagine the world. Black feminism(s) to paraphrase Patricia Hill Collins 'gives people the tools resist their oppression and ... inspires them to do it'. I look forward to facilitating more student workshops and bridging the gap between Black feminism(s) and the next generation. P.S. Working with young people is my favourite thing, don't hesitate to invite me to do a workshop or talk at your school. #internationalwomensday #womensmonth #education #internationalwomensday2024 #blackfeminism #blackwomen

Natoshia Anderson, Ed. D.: “It is not enough to talk about the problems, we have to be about having solutions to them. In the article, there are potential solutions and strategies that as a collective we can use to solve our diversity problem. I am convinced that together we can overcome. We are better together.” Please share ways you think these solutions and strategies can be implemented at your workspace below!

Diversity within STEM matters. What we know is that there is a shortage of diverse voices within the STEM stratosphere. Black women make up less there 3% of those employed in STEM careers in the United States. "This discrepancy points to a systemic issue that transcends the boundaries of mere vocational interest and speaks to the heart of accessibility, opportunity, and support." Dr. Natoshia Anderson. It is not enough to talk about the problems, we have to be about having solutions to them. In the article, there are potential solutions and strategies that as a collective we can use to solve our diversity problem. I am convinced that together we can overcome. #CantBeErased #TheEducationTrust "Since 2021, 44 states have introduced bills or taken steps toward restricting the teaching of so-called #critical #race #theory (CRT), banning books, and or censoring the ways in which race can be discussed in classrooms. These unwarranted bills prevent schools from proactively teaching the root causes of systemic racism, tie the hands of teachers rather than support them, and hold students back from grappling with and helping to solve real challenges facing our society. And the threats continue. By not teaching students the imperfect history of our country, we are failing to prepare them to be problem solvers and effective citizens in a multicultural society. Students need edification, not indoctrination — and America’s brutal truths cannot be swept under the rug in place of rosy fairy tales. We are focused on taking a stand against the threats waged on schools and educators who dare to #teach #true #American #history in classrooms. Our campaign, “Can’t Be Erased” (#CantBeErased) highlights the importance of the various #banned #books #by #Black, #LGBTQ+, and #Latino #authors, and how a continuous move towards #repression #is #ultimately #regressive #education.". #educators

Happy Pride! I am happy to announce that I am starting my dissertation research and seeking participants. With your help, I am looking to recruit California public college students (CSU or UC) who self-identify as both Black and LGBTQ+. This research seeks to understand how students are being engaged in a continuous, intersectional, and equitable matter to achieve belonging and retention outcomes for Black LGBTQ+ students, while paying attention to Black LGBTQ+ students' own perceptions and experiences. As part of the study, I am conducting 60 minute narrative-inquiry interviews with undergraduate college students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) to help us understand the context in which Black LGBTQ+ students belong in relation to campus resources, clubs, and spaces. Participation in this study is voluntary and confidential and will include questions about your own perceptions and experiences as a Black LGBTQ+ student, college resource/cultural affinity centers, programming (if any), and the work of the college or centers identified. If you know anyone who is a current student or recent graduate of a CA public 4-year university (UC & CSU) and identifies as Black and LGBTQ+ then please feel free to pass on this flyer or forward this post. the QR code will take participants to an onboarding survey where they can schedule time to meet via calendly.
