Our built environment is responsible for 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions (14Gt per year); and these emissions are still rising, as the world continues to urbanize and add floor area the size of New York City every month. This is the result of our legitimate and urgent needs for quality housing, offices, factories, shops, hospitals, schools, transport hubs, as well as the underlying infrastructure that connects everything. So how do we deliver to these needs while eliminating the negative environmental and climate impacts? How do we transform the built environment in order to halve its emissions by 2030 and fully decarbonize it by 2050? Only a full system- and value chain approach can help us get there. Buildings and infrastructure are the result of a decision-making and investment process involving many parties. But this decision-making process is still fragmented and does not focus on carbon reductions. This needs to change, and it is what the Built Environment Market Transformation initiative under the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) is trying to achieve. Read here my insights from a CEO dialogue and a full value chain workshop during New York Climate Week, which discussed the business leadership and the collaborative actions needed in the next 1-3 years to transform the built environment. I would like to say a big thank you to all the colleagues who have joined us on the Market Transformation journey so far for your insights, expertise and passion! It is thanks to you that we can build a truly shared global action agenda - and it will need all of us to make the difference! Thank you Roland Hunziker for this article highlighting the urgent need for a systemic transformation in the built environment to combat climate change. The statistics presented about the environmental impact of the construction and operation of buildings are staggering. Achieving the goal of halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050 requires a comprehensive, collaborative effort. The CEOs' emphasis on collaboration, data sharing, and creating a common purpose in the industry is commendable. The need to address workforce training and the importance of demonstrating the business case for decarbonization are crucial aspects of this transformation. I am looking forward to join hands and 2000-Watt Smart Cities Association can play a crucial role in supporting this cause. By promoting and implementing energy-efficient technologies and sustainable urban planning, the association can contribute to reducing emissions in the built environment. The focus on whole-life carbon assessment, integration of carbon costs, and transforming demand and supply dynamics are all areas where the association can provide valuable expertise and guidance.
